Ok, sounds like the n00b question of the month, but I was seriously wondering this.
On the back of dustless chalk it says it contains calcium carbonate.
If you used a file to grind it up into a powder, could it be an acceptible substitute for pickling lime? (Can't find any)
From washing a chalkboard, the dust in the water eventually settles out, there is visible precipitate on the bottom.
Thanks

No.

I wouldn't try it. I'd be afraid of what impurities might be contained in it. A food-grade lime would be a better bet. I think Mrs Wages is available online, and lime is used in tortilla making, I think, so maybe a restaurant supply place might work.

I thought impurities might be an issue.
Thanks

There's plenty online. I ordered from this place about a month ago. http://www.canningpantry.com/pickling-lime.html

Thanks for the links.
The shipping on the mrs. Wages site defeats the purpose of buying the pickling lime instead of kalkwasser!

Chalk is calcium carbonate,a piece of calcite , not calcium hydroxide wich is mixed into limewater. Adding calcium carbonate is the same as adding a rock to your tank(it does nothing),and will not be effective at adding calcium and alkalinty.

Good point, I missed the "calcium carbonate" part and went straight to toxicity issues.

You could, however, use chalk sticks as a substrate if you want an unusual tank. :D

It still is a $1-2 less per lb over Kalk from online stores. Unless you can find a sale. My local Publix grocery used to carry the Ball brand but no longer.:(

Its still half the price as Kalkwasser even including the shipping cost of the mrs wages!!! I just got a case of the stuff. I also have 2 4lb cans of the Kalkwasser and about 6 cans of the Balls stuff!!! I think I'm set on pickling lime!!! :)

Well, the local grocery store (lgs) just started carrying mrs. wages for $2.50 for a 1lb. can! Right on!
