I am finally setting up my refugium for my tank and I'm looking for some advice. I would appreciate any pictures and sand bed advice. Also should I have LR in there or no? Im using a 35 gallon tank as the fug for a 75gallon display btw. Only 3 fish in the display now so very light bioload just looking to kill bad algae growth in display.

Take a look around

Also, are you addressing the causes of the algae outbreak?

Most people seem to just go with LR and not sand. I've currently got a 10g fuge for 30g tank. It has sand. The 40g fuge I'm building for my 75 will just have LR and no sand. If your going to DIY, make sure you leave room for a skimmer.

Most commercial sumps put the skimmer chamber last, however there is a 50 page skimmer thread on here that strongly suggest the skimmer should be in the first chamber. I moved the skimmer in my 10g and it made a big difference.

I personally like have a very deep sand bed in my fuge (4-8"). I then spread LR rubble along the bottom and a hand full of Cheatomorpha.

Do you allow uncontrolled algae growth for the most part?

yes chaeto will control all the unwanted algea growth and if it groes out of control pull some out feed your fish or through away it is cheap and does great job controlling parameters
