i have a large 5 inch squamosa. everything was fine, then yesturday it appeared to be closed and its mantle ( i hope that is the correct term) was not extended. this morning i noticed that it was retracted quite a bit? is it a goner? I fed it 2 days ago and it was fine...what could have caused this. the other 2 clams in my tank are fine. thanks, jen

I had a similiar experience with mine, then I saw some cleaner shrimp hanging on it. I did a fresh water dip and the next day it opened again. Not sure what was wrong but it's almost new again. Good luck. Marcye

One thing to check is if anything has invated it from its underside. Sometime they can get a preditor coming in from the bysal glans and we can't see it.

well i feed it with dt. i think there is no chance of survival. now it seems as if all the crabs are starting to check out what is going on. should i attempt to dip it or just take it out? i am soooo po'ed it was huge and pretty

DTs is good but if you spot feed it you could of choke the clam :(, just feed the tank. I don't know if that's what happened, sorry. If you dip it it probably won't survive the dip at this stage.

so what to do? that sucks. i thought it needed to be spot fed.

If it's really bad anyway, I would try to dip it. Mine looked awful and after the dip came slowly back. GL

my gigas looked to be on its last legs a week or so ago....I thought for sure it was dead.

But I made on last inspection of its underside and found a couple of small pyramid snails. I cleaned them off and later that night checked again and there were tons on the bottom of the clam. I placed him in the sump (to get him away fromn the other clams). Every night, I removed him and manually removed the snails. I brushed the shell and the shells of the other clams every other night with a tooth brush.

He looks almost like new.
