I have been looking for sand. Several people have PMed and said they are looking for it too. These are my results from today.

No southdown anywhere.

I did find 50 LB bags of Quickrete at HD and Lows
I think it was $3.05 at Lows and $3.27 at HD

HD also had Durascape White Play sand. This is the stuff that says Not for Aquarium use. That stuff is $3.99

If anyone finds white sand, southdown etc please let me/us know.

I think Walmart was carrying the Old Castle (new name for the southdown sand) last year. I bet they are starting to stock up for the spring, you might try them.

I'm looking for 5 bags, no luck so far. Agway in Danielson says they can order it but have to order a full pallet. I'll post if I find some.

Hey Chuck - Southdown also says "Not for Aquarium Use" on the outside of the bag. Go figure.

tsquad
03/07/2006, 04:13 PM
Yeah, they say that because their supplier also supplies Caribsea I believe. Rockym, let's definitely order that pallet. I'm sure people are VERY interested, I am at least..

Walmart just got in the Kelidescope (sp) colored sand. They have all there patio sets out and fertilizers. It won't be long before they have regular sand 9although the associate didn't know when).

I got my sand last summer from KMART - White Sandcastle (Ithink that was the name) for $3.00 a bag and have been very happy with it. It is a larger grain size than the Southdown.

KOLOR SCAPE its made by oldcastle, you can get it at HD. It's says not for aquarium use but that as disclaimer so you'll buy the expenssive stuff at the LFS

I will fly to the Caribbean and collect my own. I will bring 2 carry-on and pack my suitcases with it. That will be at least 400lbs I might have to pay extra cause they frown on bags over 50lbs now a days.....

The $600 on gas would kill us though :D ..

cmhollis
03/07/2006, 10:50 PM
We get enough people to go in at $15 per bag and we got the gas covered. Pittsburgh is only like a tank and a half each way, so three tanks at say $65 per is $195 in gas, plus say $40 for tolls. We would only have to be buying 50 bags or so and it is covered. I am sure we can find enough people that we could get 50 bags ordered.

I was kidding. I would hope it does not come to that but if there in no sand out with in a month I would be in. I would rather spend $3-5 a bag though....

$15 for 50 lbs is still better than $35 for 30 lbs at the LFS.

may have a line on sand in northern CT. A friend of mine was in a small supply store yesterday and asked about southdown or yard right. They told him they carried in the past. He said the girl went online and pulled up the site for their suppier and it listed the yardright tropicalplay sand. She said she was going to call and find out if they can get the sand. They said its not a problem getting the sand to them seeing they own a trucking company. My friend said he should here back sometime this week Lets hope

About 90 lbs for a 4 inch bed. I need at least 6 and was going to hang on to an extra one or 2 so I can add when it needs it. I think Stan is taking 2. I might not have any left after that?

I am washing it now and losing some when I wash it. I am doing a 75 and wanted to do about a 5 inch bed or more.

I will re-post in here to let people know.

Cheers,

Why are you washing it? It's the fine stuff that's makes it so great.

Herpn
03/14/2006, 10:26 PM
dburr I dont like it so dusty. I saw it in a few tanks and think it is too fine. If a powerheads hits it you have a dust storm for a while. I washed the dust off it. Not like I strained it...

You can have all my chalkey silt if you want it.

OK. I am only going to use 6 bags as of now. I was going to save a few for my self later but I am sure there will be some around soon. I would rather help someone out.

Stan is getting 2 bags that leaves 2 Mingiunate wants 1 bag. Sequential wants 2 but there will only be one left. (Do you want one?) Chiroccato I dont think there will be any left.
But will will see.

Sorry BigWaz I used the order in the thread. There should be some out in a week or two anyway.

Just a heads up, when someone has 3 posts, chances are they might now know what a PM is...

I am going to keep my eyes open anyway. I want a few bags around just in case.

Okay here is what I have learned from an Agway Manger who placed a call to the company who makes the sand (Southdown, Old Castle , YardRight). The Company Stop making the sand two years ago. It also no longer makes or sell crushed shells. What ever is left in the supply line is all thats left. Sounds like they caught on to the fact everyone was buying it up form their tanks and not buying their product for much more money from the pets stores.

I don't understand what the big deal is. it's freakin sand, it's not hard to package, they make a profit. Can they just sel me my bags and i can go in peace. I mean i think it's so stupid that i have to play so much more money at the pet stores for the same exact sand. Why does this have to be so difficult. I'm going to make a sand company, anyone wanna join?

This sand is kiln dried at 1000 degrees. That is the only thing they do with it besides sifting it. Kinda weird but every bag of the 6 I opened had One round white stone in it...

The IPO name if to CO will be Super Sand. Who whats in at 50 cents a share?

Oh ya the rest of the Bags can be bid on here
