I have seen some attached to my Astrea Snails. Maybe 2 or 3 at times. I have been considering getting a Crocea Clam. Is it safe to add a Clam to a tank that has these snails (in small numbers) or does a tank need to be completely clear of them?

Thanks,
Craig

I would eliminate as many as possible before you get a clam.

OK, I decided to pick them off the Astrea Snails manually. I found 12 Astreas and moved them to my QT tank. Some of them had about 20 pyramids on them and others only a couple. Probably picked out about 100.

My question is, is there anything else they would feed off of? I have about 10 Cerith Snails, 1 Queen Conch and 2 Nerite Snails left in the display. I don't believe they feed off of corals, but I have Muchrooms, Zoas, Yellow Polyps, Finger Leather, Blastos, Frogspawns, Torch, Hammer, Galaxeas, Monti. Digi, Pocllioporo and an Acro.

I believe I got out all of the hosts, so in that case about how long is the life cycle? And how about any eggs? How long should I leave the snails out for?

The pyramid snails that feed off of snails would not feed off of clams. If you have no clams in the the tank, then you don't have to worry about them. The only way pyramid snails that feed off of clams are introduced are on clams.

Hope this helps!

there are about 10000 different types of Pyrams, some will fed on clams only, some on clams and snails, some wont touch ether

Johnsteph10 - Are you sure that the snails on the Astreas won't feed off of Clams? My tank has been running for over a year and I've never had a Clam. That would be great news.

Thanks,
Craig

What if you had the pyramids that feed on clams only - how long after my last clam died should I wait before reintroducing a new clam?

Under the cercumstances that some people aren't too sure I'd advise against busting $50 for a clam only to fear it being eating alive.

Any idea how long I should wait before putting the snails back and getting a Clam?

Never buy a clam? I have removed all Astreas and scrubed them clean. So, they don't have any and the ones in my tank should starve off. I was just currious how long it takes for them to starve off?

I cleaned pyramid snails off my turbos for a year, thinking that they might get to my 2 Croceas and 1 maxima. Not once did I see one of those snails on any one of my clams. And I checked regularly!
I was so anal about getting rid of them, I think I just killed them out. I would inspect snails on the water line every other day. If I saw any pyramids on them, they would get wiped down totally. I realized later that they weren't infecting my clams but they would have killed the snails if I hadn't done anything.
