What does everyone use to mechanically filter their water? Filter socks, canister filters?
Right now I only have my skimmer and what ever settles in my sump.

I have a similar question for anyone out there using Filter socks for mechanical filtration. Do you prefer the 50 micron filter sock or the 100 micron? Is one better than the other? I know the 100 micron will let particles smaller than 100 microns through, and the same concept for the 50 micron sock, but is one better than the other? Thanks!

Where do you place it? On the end of the sump return to filter the water as it returns into the sump?
Where do you buy them?

100 % of my water goes through 100 micron filter socks. they really pull out alot of gunk. i run my skimmer ahead of them. sorry i dont know which is better 100 or 50.

Gary are you using the 100 or 50 micron?
I used the Berlin bags, not sure if they are 100 or 50. Water dumps into the bag in the sump, then goes through the protein skimmer and then return pump. I also have a small filter that has carbon in the sump.

gary's set up is probably the best if you have room for it. filter floss is cheap and you don't have to clean it like the socks I buy my floss at Joan fabrics.

for those using filter socks, who is cleaning and reusing them and how?

100's is what I use 50's plug to fast
2 gal of water and 1 cup bleach soak sock for 24hrs rinse hang and reuse :)
I have 2. I change them at least once a week. Turn them inside out and wash them in the washer with hot water and a little bleach. Hang to dry.

100 micron floss. It still gets full of gunk pretty fast, but it will never clog the return in that basket.

Question.
Do these 50 or 100 micron socks help with microbubbles? I have very very small micorbubbles that make it back to my return pumps. makes my tank look "dusty"

I have a similar setup to Gary's However instead of the basket I have an acrylic box that I got from TRS

I used 100 micron Coralife filter pads that I change every other day. I rinse the pads then hag them to dry every month or so I wash them in a low dilution of bleach.
