anybody run their fo tank skimmerless?

right now i am because my POS prism pump went out. that skimmer is junk!

I've been running my 75 w/o a skimmer since I set up over a year ago. I haven't had any problems that I know of. I do 20% water changes every month and deep clean the filter bed (crushed coral) periodically.

I have been skimmerless for over a year, and all water perameters are fine. I know there are some others who are skimmerless on this site. There was a thread a few months ago.

It can be done successfully even though most others will disagree.

I run skimmerless and have for years now, make sure you do your water changes when scheduled if you are going skimmerless.......... Up keep is very important!

There is a great skimmerless thread going on right now with Eric B. and others, I thought I knew my tank before, but now I understand my tank....

Skimmerless for two years... the Xenia, Zoos, and softies in general love it. Can't say the same for the few SPS I have though...

Skimmer less five years with this tank and five years with my old tank, no problems. I probably do five or six 15 gallon water changes a year with 24 fish, sps, lps, and leathers. I only use a refugium for filtration, never had hair algae or any other problems.

Back in the early 90's I successfully ran my fish only tanks without any skimmers. Skimmers were around then but there weren't as many variety/options of them out there. You can get away with it if you do religious water changes like others have said above - BUT if you are getting into Hard corals or Fish only tanks with heavy bio loads plan towards getting one.

Just as a side note go to your Local Fish Store and seem how many of their skimmers are working, and I they are working see take a look at them and see if the are large enough to handle the system they are on. I bet you would be hard pressed to find a lot of them running or matched correctly.

I went skimmerless for a about 6months with only a refuge w/ chaeto in it, everything went well for a while and the fish seemed very healthy but then some cyanobacteria started in a small area and then BOOM it was everywhere. I think if you do good sized water changes monthly then you should be ok, but why not just get a decent skimmer?
