Hi new here this looks very interesting. Just wondering what some of you do with all the frags once your display tanks are full.

Swap friends for other frags they have in there tank. My LFS will not buy but will give store credit and for someone I do not know just a small price to help pay for salt and other items for the tank.

I let them go free, free to roam the world and experience new and wonderful places.

I really just trade, give away, or sell at my LFS for credit for supplies etc.

Sell/trade with friends, I have a LFS that will give cash and another store that gives me credit and sometimes cash. I just do this to offset some of the costs of the hobby. and it is starting to pay-off.

Here is an ironic thing to think about. I have received more than 10x in store credit than the original cost of the parent corals purchased from that store.

If I didn't prune some of my soft corals my tanks would be overrun with Xenia and Red Mushrooms.

What kinds of corals do you find most popularly in demand by lfs either for trade or credit?

It changes. Everybody always wants SPS, but don't always understand the sticker shock at the LFS. Slow growing compared to most soft corals, which means higher cost. Most frags from established aquarium pieces do seem to grow faster and adapt better than most wild caught IME. This seem to apply with most coral I have purchased soft or hard

Soft corals always do well for trade at the LFS, cheaper and easier to keep, mostly because cheaper on the retail side. But the demand for the different corals change.
ex. One of the LFS I go to I was suppling red Mushrooms and they went fast. Now she has a few left looking for a home. With my Pulsing Xenia at first I would supplied the LFS with a few nice pieces and they sat. Then a little later in the year I can't bring enough to sell and then a month later it just sits again.

Zoos are always popular, generally a higher priced coral than most softies. But the color demands change. Again slower to propagated.

xenias!

once your tank condition is right, they spread like weeeeeds!!
it's crazy! look at this:

of course Green star polyps, anthelias.
although they don't sell for as much as SPS, but they grow so fast that they'll bring in good $$ from selling to lfs. and also trading. you can trade for other stuff too.

Thank you for the information.....so you guys need to keep current with what's in.....if you have a product that decreases in demand..do you try to ship it out to other places....or slow its propogation rate?

Xenia, mushrooms, umbrella leathers, green star polyps. All grow/ reproduce extremely fast, which makes for paying for salt, carbon, additives, food, other coral etc.....

i wish i could get 1 piece to start growing my own but my lfs only has like 2 pieces and neither of them look healthy and i dont want to pay 30 bucks for a piece that looks like it could fall over and die... i want to pay 5 bucks for a tiny healthy piece and let my tank get like that and then sell it all back for 5 bucks a stalk... lol

big scott---if it is to ask...what kind of credit do they give you for frags--and for what size? Do they constantly want to give you less $ since they know they are the only willing traders?

thanks ...zoa

I know stores that would love to do business with propigators but DBA's and advertizing are always a problem for propigators.. you should seek out stores JMO
