View Full Version : pulsing xenia not pulsing

I have multiple pulsing xenia (frags), the cluster in the front of my tank is pulsing fine and looks fat, bushy, and healthy, whereas a cluster towards the middle/back of the tank looks weak and thin--plus they barely pulse, or pulse halfway. Its like they are wincing. The water paramaters are fine, and I know that they didnt stop pulsing due to interference, since they have been that way for a couple of days.

Anyone have any idea whats going on?

Move them to a different spot if possible. Xenia is also a good at warning you of problems before you might otherwise notice them.
Double check your water parameters.

Xenia usually stop pulsing when your ph has dropped

not all of my xenia stop pulsing, just a cluster or two--but Ill double check the ph anyway.

Another thing, one of the unpulsing clusters is mounted onto live rock (an immovable piece) so should I cut it iff and start all over again in a different spot?

Thanks

Don't move them. People aren't exactly 100% sure why they stop pulsing. Everything can be fine even when they aren't pulsing. Give it a bit.

I'd leave it alone. Sounds like it's already stressed, let it take some time to recover and/or move itself to a new spot (they can 'walk' across LR by attaching part of their stalk to a new spot, detaching the base, then doing it again, etc. until they're in a spot they like). Xenia is fickle, no one really knows what makes them pulse or not but they can be healthy either way.

Yea don't move them my ph swings from 7.8 to 8.3 and they don't stop. Talk about walking :D

I would not worry about Xenia not pulsing. Xenia can change from day to day. It seems to do what it wants.

Mine stopped pulsing about two to three weeks before they shriveled to nothing.

LFS guy told me once that xenia pulses to pull water in to feed and if it is not pulsing water flow is strong enough to not require it to pulse to pull water in. Just what I heard once.

Double-check your lighting, too: if a bulb has begun to go, they might not get all they need. Mine didn't pulse until I got my MH running.

NO one actually knows for sure why they pulse. I would not worry to much yet, mine have stopped and started again a week later. If you are worried a water change can never hurt.

i think i may have burnt one to death since it was perched on a piece of LR pretty high up towards the light. It just doesnt make sense that it shriveled up now, weeks after it has been with the halide

That may not be the problem. Mine are right at the top of my tank with a 400watt halide and love it.
