I need to replace the current acrylic shielding in my canopy. The arylic has melted in 3 spots under each bulb. I would like to get some glass cut for it, but I dont know which kind to get. The glass has to withstand a lot of heat. Also it will get an occasional splash of water, so it should not shatter because of this. I also do not want to lose a lot of PAR due to the shielding. What would you recomend?

I have a storebought light hood that I just cleaned: it's thin, but it has the "tempered glass" stamp on the shield.

As far as I know any glass will work. What kind of bulbs are you running. Why do you even need a shield in there? The only bulbs you need to have shielding with is MH HQI and you would not have had acrylic to begin with. Bulbs can withstand small splatters of water in my experience if that is your concern.

I need the shielding to enclose my hood. The fans in the closed canopy allow me to run the tank without a chiller. I am running 250W XM 10K's on PFO magnetic ballasts.

Get some plate glass cut to size (1/16" thick) then have them send the glass out to be tempered. Do not use glass that has not been tempered as a lense for your hood, it will shatter when it becomes hot and gets a splash. Any glass shop can do this for you.

UV or water??? I run (6) 400 watt halides, (4) 160 watt vho's and (4) 96 watt pc's. 12" off the water for 4 years with no problems. what I was getting at was the heat and gas exchange with covering or not covering your tank

ricks,

I have a bowfront tank. The light canopy only covers about 50-60% of the top. There is still plenty of room for ventillation.
