View Full Version : Back in the Saddle Again!! My new 480g In-Wall thread

Well if you haven't heard by now I basically lost everything including my tank in the Big Move to Texas, there are threads about it which I don't really want to talk about. Anyways I am going to be building a 480g in wall tank, it consists of a Acrylic 96"x48"x24" and is made of 1-1/4" completely to have a 4" euro brased top. Steve at SocalCreations will be handling this feat, and I will be welding the stand out of 4"x4"x1/4" mild steel. The reason for the industrial strength stand is it will be free standing including the 4-5" lip that will make the tank flush with the outside wall. I haven't seen one built like this so I will put my welding skills to the test. The front will be faced with a variety of high density urethane based crown molding, pilasters, friezes and other accents to create a pleasing look to the install. I have a crude pic of a ghetto drawing of the look I hope to obtain.http://images.snapfish.com/3465%3A66%3A2%7Ffp33%3B%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D323359%3B8%3B39%3A%3Bnu0mrj Here are some pics of the actual wall and adjoing "fish room" that will be housing the system. I will be using the same equipment but will be removing the Vho setup and adding on 3 more Lumenarcs to the mix, so a total of 6-400w lighting the tank.http://images.snapfish.com/3465%3A66%3A2%7Ffp33%3B%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D323359%3B8%3A4%3C8%3Cnu0mrj http://images.snapfish.com/3465%3A66%3A2%7Ffp342%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D323359%3B8%3A7%3C85nu0mrj http://images.snapfish.com/3465%3A66%3A2%7Ffp343%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D323359%3B8%3A7%3C79nu0mrj http://images.snapfish.com/3465%3A66%3A2%7Ffp346%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D323359%3B8%3A4%3C7%3Cnu0mrj http://images.snapfish.com/3465%3A66%3A2%7Ffp344%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D323359%3B8%3A4%3C7%3Anu0mrj http://images.snapfish.com/3465%3A66%3A2%7Ffp344%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D323359%3B8%3A4%3C86nu0mrj I am debating on adding 4 of the wavy seas in each corner,or a pair of waveboxes w/ my 4 streams or 8- oceans motion. I will also be looking to upgrade my skimmer, I am looking at the Deltec 703 or comperable skimmer. Any suggestions or experience you have had in the past would be greatly appeciated.

A suggestiom , screw the 4 inch euro and extra thick acrylic and use a welded steel frame , made of 1.5 angle , Tig weld it so its nice . an dthen cover ot the pve angle thats miteres and welded at the corners . I buils all my tanks this way and its the only way to , look at some of the german tank bulider thay do it that way . You will still gt a alot of bow with a 4 inch brace . One of my tanks is 6 x 8 x 4 foot high and has no bow .

Very interesting.

What do you plan on making the lip out of? 3/8"x 8" would be the minimum, probably.

AcroSteve
03/20/2006, 05:06 PM
Bill, What thickness angle would you suggest for 8'x4'? Your 8' tank has a center brace. Could you possibly use 2" angle and avoid it?

Are you saying to just build an open top acrylic box "tank" and then put the frame around it? Or build it in the frame from the beginning?

Bill Wann
03/20/2006, 06:51 PM
Build the box and put he frame on , the cover the frame in pve so it doeasnt corode .I Have a six foot cube tank with out a center brace and sitll using 1.5 inch angle ,

You still have your Chalice corals and a few acros!
I'll be following this closely; Check out some of your babies.
Your Chalice corals are one the left and right of the tank at the bottom.

I've always used tubular steel to build my stands, but some of you seem to prefer angle iron. Any particular reason?

Loserkidz, are you using Mig or Tig to weld?

Ixthys,
with the steel being 1/4" I am using my Lincoln Ranger9 arc welder with onboard Generator since I will have to weld it in the fish room, my calcs come up with 827# worth of steel. I don't think I will be trying to move it into the house. Servo, thanks for your help with housing my corals that lived. i know you and Marc have been a great help. I just hope to return the favor later once I get my system up and running. I still owe Marc some welding work too.
Thanks,
Brent

No problem man! I know what it is like to move across the country with a big tank. Too bad you didn't move a little closer toward the Metroplex, anyway, I'm sure you'll be active in the club. I hope your family is making the adjustments!

Ixthys

Dang that's a lot of steel! Are you planning on just melting it all down into one big solid mass? :D

On a serious note though, what are you going to use to protect the metal from rust?

If you check out my Cali. friend Konadog in the Maslac forum he catually coated his stand with Linex. I saw in person and you could hit it with a wrench and it was dead silent. I swear it was 1/4" thick. I will definately have to buy the Diy kit since I wouldn't be able to haul the stand around.

please pm me you number I liked the look of your tanks facia boards. Very clean and appealing.

Konadog, that is just plain sweet! Plus, it looks like you've got some nice joints there.

How do you do it on-site? They make a DIY Line-x type material? I know some folks looked into this, and you had to buy big drums of the chemicals as well as the sprayer.

Konadog
03/23/2006, 08:54 AM
I don't know of a DIY kit or even a portable system. HD carries a roll on bed liner, but it's nothing like Line-x. I do think it will work since we aren't tossing a ton of junk on it and driving like a nut job down the freeway with it!

As Brent mentioned, this stuff definitely deadened the sound transfer of a metal stand.

Well I was able to make some time this week with my busy and akward work schedule and was able to finish riping out the wall and bracing up the perimeter. I ended up shooting the texture coat and knocking it down to match the rest o fthe wall. I should be riping up the carpet in the fish room tonight, and will start cutting up the 4x4 steel sunday. I will have to wled it in the room as there is no way to move it once it is built. I also picked up the rubberized truchk liner for the stand too.
Steve at t Socalcreations.com said the tank should be here the first of May. I hope to have everything done including laying the tile out in the room and have the full facia done on the oustde as well.http://images.snapfish.com/3466%3B349%3B%7Ffp33%3A%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D323359%3B8%3A4%3C77nu0mrj http://images.snapfish.com/3466%3B349%3B%7Ffp342%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D3233626964%3B75nu0mrj http://images.snapfish.com/3466%3B349%3B%7Ffp344%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D32336269698%3B8nu0mrj http://images.snapfish.com/3466%3B349%3B%7Ffp342%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D3233626964%3B74nu0mrj

Well I ended up welding up the stand yesterday and will finish grinding down the welds and applying the first coat of the sprayon liner. I had a hell of a time flipping the stand around to do the welding, remember it is 4"X4"X1/4" square tubing. Once I welded the top structure I had to weld on the legs and turn it 180 degrees to stand it up. I have it worked out to be over 800#s so it wasn't an easy task. That is the reason for me welding it inside the room, not that I wanted to but I couldn't see any other way for one person to do it. And yes, my kids had on welding goggles, I just couldn't find any small enough for my fish!!!!!!!!!!!!!http://images.snapfish.com/34672%3A742%7Ffp33%3A%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D323362%3B6%3C5596nu0mrj http://images.snapfish.com/34672%3A742%7Ffp343%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D323362%3B734%3B28nu0mrj http://images.snapfish.com/34672%3A742%7Ffp345%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D323362%3B6%3B9626nu0mrj http://images.snapfish.com/34672%3A742%7Ffp343%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D323362%3B6%3B348%3Anu0mrj http://images.snapfish.com/34672%3A742%7Ffp345%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D323362%3B6%3B3498nu0mrj

I would have liked to have all of the corners mitered as I usually do, but with it being made out of such large tubing my chopsaw just wasn't up to the task, believe me I tried. If you notice in the following pictures the whole stand will be supporting all of the weight. Most inwalls rest on the front pony wall. I actually have a 1/4" gap between the stand and the wall, hence the reason for such a beefed up stand.http://images.snapfish.com/34672%3A742%7Ffp342%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D323362%3B6%3B9627nu0mrj http://images.snapfish.com/34672%3A742%7Ffp345%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D323362%3B6%3B348%3Cnu0mrj http://images.snapfish.com/34672%3A742%7Ffp344%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D323362%3B6%3B9629nu0mrj http://images.snapfish.com/34672%3A742%7Ffp339%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D323362%3B6%3B3496nu0mrj http://images.snapfish.com/34672%3A742%7Ffp345%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D323362%3B734%3B29nu0mrj http://images.snapfish.com/34672%3A742%7Ffp342%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D323362%3B734%3B33nu0mrj http://images.snapfish.com/34672%3A742%7Ffp344%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D323362%3B6%3C55%3A7nu0mrj http://images.snapfish.com/34672%3A742%7Ffp339%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D323362%3B734%3B3%3Cnu0mrj

Brent, that stand is capable of holding up your entire house! Nice job. How's the sump and frag tank holding up? I lost a few more things before I could transfer all my stuff over. It's a good thing I didn't take any of your stuff before you left.

Ixthys, this is what Line-x truck bed liner looks like on a stand, but it has to be done in a shop with a special sprayer:

Darn. I typed that up a long time ago, and wish I could just point you to the link. Since I use the word "club" so often, a search won't find it.

The club is a huge perk for local hobbyists. You have someone to lean upon when things go wrong during the night or day. You learn tricks that save you money or simplify your tank's needs. You have a network of people spotting great deals. You can purchase stuff in bulk and divvy it up. You can do group buys and divide shipping evenly. You have a group to visit with monthly in person, to just talk about what you love. And more...

Yes, find your local club. If you go to MASNA.org, you can look at the national club database to see if one is near you. Your location is a tad vague to me, so I can't help.

Well, the tank should be arriving at the terminal this afternoon and I will be trailering it home from Dallas to my house her in Rockwall. I finally got a chance to do some more work on the fish room. The outside is basically done, all of the moldings and trim and also the front hatch is complete. Here is the sketch from the first page of this thread. http://images.snapfish.com/3465%3A66%3A2%7Ffp33%3B%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D323359%3B8%3B39%3A%3Bnu0mrj and here is a pic of it now. http://images1.snapfish.com/346989672%7Ffp33%3B%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D32336%3A53%3A%3A573nu0mrj http://images1.snapfish.com/346989672%7Ffp342%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D32336%3A53%3A%3A575nu0mrj http://images1.snapfish.com/346989672%7Ffp339%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D32336%3A53%3C9%3B35nu0mrj http://images1.snapfish.com/346989672%7Ffp343%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D32336%3A53%3C9%3B36nu0mrj http://images1.snapfish.com/346989672%7Ffp33%3A%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D32336%3A53%3C9%3B37nu0mrj http://images1.snapfish.com/346989672%7Ffp339%3Enu%3D323%3B%3E677%3E469%3EWSNRCG%3D32336%3A53%3A%3A577nu0mrj I must first thank my wife for putting up with my mess and the patience to see me rip a hole in our new house. I am having some of my friends from work come by Sat. to help lift the tank onto the stand. The tank has 2 2'' drains 2 1 1/2" bulkheads also in the overflow and also two 1 1/2" holes in the rear panel for a closed loop. I will be using my seq 5800seq23 for my return and pushing it back into the tank through my 8way oceans motion. And lastly but not least I have four streams that will be helping puch the flow back and forth. I will post some pics once the tank arrives and I know I must have the required kids in the tank shot, I am just wondering if I can shove my whole family in it!!!

Thanks for all the compliments. I will be welding up the light rack in a few minutes and hopefully have the Lumenarcs up and firing tonight. I havent't had a chance to order the linear actuator to raise and lower the rack yet, so it will have to be raised manually for now.
Chris, yes I did the trim work so it could have been more ornate, but this was my first shot at something like this.

That looks absolutely stunning! Work well done! I'm surprised that you were able to find enough guys to lift that monster. I've live here for about 19 months and I don't think that I have enough friends to help lift a 150 let alone your tank. Looking absolutely awesome. So tell me; how do you ultimately envision this tank? What are your aquascaping plans? Are you going to make valleys? Do you want a couple of large colonies of acropora or are you just going to load it up?

Now for the 500 dollar trip to Lowes/HD!
What circulation are you going to use? Ever consider eductors on your closed loop? Frag system?

Questions questions questions. Oh yah... When are you going to come get these massive chalice colonies? :p  :D Just kiddin!

Mark, when I talked with him, he said that SoCal creations recommends putting foam under it. Problem was, Brent didn't leave any room for it. After speaking with them, and seeing the detail he put into the stand, they said it was OK to put it directly on the wood.

I had a feeling. A lot of people don't consider the 3/4" to 1" thickness the foam will take up. Glad they signed off on his platform.

Servo,
I was fortunate enough to have some great guys to work with over here when I moved out here to Texas, I transferred within the company so alot of people already new who I was and my work ethics. Plus I fed them and had the fight that night!!! As far as the aquascaping goes. In my ghetto fabulous drawing on the first page, my ultimate goal is to leave plenty of room for my fish to grow out in and enjoy their new home. I have a large 14" vlamingi tang that is eye balling the new tank since he is crammed in my sump for now. I couldn't belive when I got my first electrical bill out here how much ya'all pay, I thought it was bad in California. My system isn't even up yet and I am paying more now than over there.
So to offset some of the usage I am not going to be using the 6-luminarcs that was in my first plan. I ended up getting away with 4 of them and the spread is nice..... In the pics only 3 were lit as I found out that one of my capcitors is bad.
I brought with me from cali around 1100#'s of marshall, fiji, and tonga that I had in my old system plus some huge pedistal/shelf pieces I got from my friend Tat(Tat's Tropical Illusions/Rio/Taam/oceanpure). Some measure 36"x30" so I am looking to do valleys and islands througout the tank. Eventhough my old system way 385g I had way too much rock in there for a full blown SPS system with large fish. I love both worlds, but my huge tangs always fragged my colonies for me. My approach here is the leave out plenty of room for them to swim around the islands, not into them. I will probably need a couple of Aquacaping Experts to help out when I am ready to take that next step!!
As far as plumbing goes, I have made numerous trips to Lowes/HD and marine depot and have most of the major compnents. The systme will b edriven by 1-sequence 5800seq23 which will return from my huge sump that Marc fixed. It will then head straight through one of the 1-1/2" bublkheads that is inside the overflow. It will then extend about 5" above the top of the tank which the oceans motion 8way will sit atop and drop all the returns along th eperimeter of the tank. I will also have 4 streams throught the tank to help out with flow too.
My wife is begging me to not go DSB as I had problems with my other tank picking up sand with the magnet and scratching the tank up. I already have the sand in the garage, I ended up going with a larger grade sand instead of the 0-sugar size that I had in my old system. Being in the hobby for for 10+ years you start to understand why all of the old timers always tell you to take your time and really plan out your system. I want to make sure that I invision for changes or upgrades in the fututre, that is why there are 2 1-1/2" bulkheads in the back wall for a later closed loop and to have such a large overflow that can hande 6000gp, just incase I want a surge system. I will keep documenting my progress as I go and thanks to all of my cali and Texas friends for you comments and support.

Welcome to Texas
Check out this website for electricity prices
http://www.powertochoose.org/

It looks like it is any where from 0.13 to 0.19 per /kWh for your zip
You can also check out the company’s web site for a better deal sometimes
Last September I changed providers and mine dropped from 0.13 to 0.09
It made a large difference in my bill
Great setup I keep following every day

Actually all of the rock is stacked, I bought a few cased of epoxy just in case but everything went together nicely. Just remember some of the pieces are actually 1 piece. There are three large tables that have their own pedestal on the bottom which I just grinded flat inorder for them to be more stable. I brought with me around 1200# of Mixed liver rock from my olod system in Cali. The huge tabletops are from Walt and Tat, thanks to them both for helping with these awesome pieces. You know you can't get pieces like that at any store!!!!

I'd cut the wall out in front of my tank if the stand and sump looked that good. Might not look good to everyone, but the true reefers would love it!

man, those rocks are freakin huge.
is all the sand getting pushed away from the front by returns in the back? Maybe you shoulda went BB like me. :D
i'm glad to see your tangs aren't squished in your frag tank anymore. i dont think you received enough flaming from the po po's.
Great set up, and really really love your in wall. Looks so clean, you're gonna have to do mine after i win the lotto. i'll fly you in, soo dont worry about it.

That looks great! So the rock was man-made. You need a few bottles of PurpleUp! ;)

That's the sump I fixed? Glad it is holding water. Not that you could ask for your money back. ;)

Your Durso's run like mine, more full than most people's. The fish look happy in all that space, and I'm happy to see you've got the tank up and running finally. June 10th is our Frag Swap, so you can pick up some pieces for your reef then.

Nice rock and rock work. I got the same base rock from Walt's when I set up my tank last year.

Marc,
the rock is actually from Walt Smith, they are huge shelve pieces that were brought in for a "friend" and these were his left over pieces.
Yep that be the infamous sump, the vlamingi is sure loving his space.

Looks like you've got that OM backed off a little bit as well-- is the pump split off to run anything else?

The whole presentation looks great. I like how you did the molding, accenting the tank without detracting from it. It looks like you painted the wall as well. Is this correct?
Do you have front access to the tank? I think you mentioned something about this.

Steve the VLamingi is pushing 14" now, he is a big eater and that is the way I like him. I saw your post over on DFWMAS, the Vlamingis are my favorite of the Surgeon fish family, just wait a few years in your huge tank and he will show you his streamers.
Ken,
From your avatar I thought you were the nose picker, my bad!!! I just realized your sig on the bottom. Yep the monti is doing well and very happy in his new home. I just couldn't watch the original owner start to break it up for others I had to give hime a offer he couldn't refuse.
Marc,
My president, if you want to get your front of your sand bed that flat this is what ya do my friend. Hook up a 5800gph pump to a oceans motion 8way and two 6100 streams and you will be set. within seconds of kicking on the pump I had a instant Bare bottom front!!!!!!!!!!

Most of the corals currently in the tank are from local club members that either are getting out of the hobby or just needed the money. Visit dfwmas.org and they have a map that has all of the local stores. I am new to Texas so I really can't give you any pointers, except for one that is a vendor on here and also on Dfwmas. Total nightmare, you can find other complaints about them on Dfwmas.

Brent,

I'm thinking of stealing your stand design, want the same 'cantilever' so that it's easily made flush with the wall. I assume the construction method used for your house is slab on grade, as is primarily used here in Houston. Did you have any concerns or do anything special for supporting the floor under the 4 legs (footings, etc ) ?

thanks,
Ted

To answer the question regarding chiller, I have a 1hp in line that I had purchased for my 385g system back in Cali. It comes on for about 5 min at a time, usually about every hour during the summer.

Don't mean to sound ignorant but how did you avoid the cycle ? I see your pics of empty tank on 5/07 then 5/12 the tank has fish swimming in it ? did you using the old sump let you get away with this ?

loserkidz
07/12/2006, 04:10 AM
It's not ignorance, I have heard that question a couple of times in this thread. All of the live rock was being cooked far a couple of months prior to the installation which basically cures the rock. I did bi-weekly water changes on the vats that was cooking the rock to remove any die off. Of course there wer powerheads and such to keep the cirulation going. The big thing that causes your big cycle is the sponges and other animals that die during shipment of the rock, by curing prior(not what the stores tell when the sell you "cured"live rock, which basically they just open and dump the box into their system) you are removing all of the bad contaminents that will usually die off in your brand new system and cause you ammonia spike"cycle". I will try to post some updated pics of the tank. It is basically now stocked with alot of sps pieces and some of my large colonies that made it during the accident.

Now that you're living with your tank, anything you would have done differently? Do you regret not having access from the front?

Did you paint the PVC or did you buy it black?

Reef waters,
The PVC is coated with the truck bed liner, I was trying to visually remove the plumbing out of the picture the piping all the way from the OM 8way to the submereged outputs are coated and are holding up perfect even the ones that are in the harsh salt water.

I have to say of all the tanks setups i've seen your rock work is probably the best out of them all. I'm sorry if i missed it but how much live sand did you end up using and could you give me some info on your lighting? Thanx and again nice setup

Very nice! So, you can use auto undercoating in the water? Is there a curing time? ... That 8-way looks awesome!

Mike I ended up dumping 5-40sacs of caribseafloor grade, but as you see from the pics the front half is bare bottom due to the flow. I actually was going to go with barebottom, but I have a thing for wrasses and ya need sand for them to sleep. As for the lighting it consists of the four L3 lumenars with two 20k helios and 2 14k hamis all 400w.
Thanks for the compliments sonofgabriel, it means alot coming from you!!
Bax,
It isn't the ruberized undercoating at the parts store, that smells bad and looks to be tar or petroleum based. The coating I used was the bedliner spray, which dried pretty fast. I can only say I haven't had any ill affects, I work for a paint manufacturer and have used alot in the past some of our pool paints for different reasons(eg. plumbing parts sch40) to make them blend in with the surrounding structures. Never had a problem!!!

Hey Brent,

The tank looks amazing! You really put the effort into making the whole project very beautiful. I was wondering, if you have time, if you could do some close-up pictures of the trim work around the tank and some close-up shots of the door above the tank open. I am really impressed with the trim work you did on your tank and would love to do something similar. I am not much of a carpenter so, some detail pics of your work would be helpful in understanding how it all comes together to look so impressive!

Thank,
Steve
