i came home today and noticed that my tank is a little murky...... im not sure what could have caused it.... i run the lights on my fuge 24/7, so i wouldnt think the algea would go sexual. All of my sps still look fine, there is still good PE on all of the corals, and my clam is extended like it normally is. so is it neccessary to do a water change since everything still looks fine? or would it be a good idea to do one anyway...thanks

Did you test for anything?

It cant hurt. I would do one and run some carbon if it were me.

no, i have not tested for anything... like i said everything looks absolutely normal except for the water is slightly hazy.... i dont think i have any carbon on hand, so i guess im gonna do a small water change then....

algae will go sexual if they run out of nutrients regardless of how you run your lights

thanks mbbuna. so then i guess that would mean that i am doing a good job at keeping my water clean for my animals and corals, right? (gotta think positive)

yes its good to think positive :). im not saying thats what happened but if it was then all the nutrients that you and your algae were doing a good job of keeping out of the water, are back!! its not fun it just happened to me a few months back and im still fighting it. most of my Acros browned out and stopped growing among other things

okay, so i didnt notice this before....most of the algea has gone white..... that means sexual right? should i just remove all of the calerpa? will my tank do okay until my very small (size of a golfball) chaeto grows more to absorb more nutrients? now im getting a little concerned.....

if its white then it went sexual. so remove it, step up your water changes, carbon and a GFO will also help. if you can get more chaeto then do it but it may not grow at all. IIRC calerpa releases a chemical that will kill or retard the growth of other competing algae

some of it has not gone sexual....should i go ahead and remove it as well?

i did

is there anything that could have caused it to go sexual besides not having enough nutrients? light was on 24/7.....i have recently (within the last month or so) switched to one of the bulbs Melev reccommended.... the first one, the one that looks more yellow...ever since then i could see "growth" tips all of the time.... so you think that the introduction of this bulb caused the algea to grow so fast that it ran out of nutrients?

and also, now that the calerpas gone, do i need to be worried about too many nutrients in my water? it was working so great..... will chaeto work to same?

my understanding some people prefer chaeto.

update.... took out all remaining Caluerpa (minus small amount that was already in display tank), did a 10% water change at 5:00. and started running some carbon in a filter sock.

would it be okay to go ahead and do another 10% water change tonight or should i wait until tomorrow or wednesday?

i would wait another day before doing my next water change, see how things are looking in the tank first, but an extra water change couldn't hurt, good luck.

if it doesnt clear up much i would just do another water change the following day.

another water change would help alot. you could do 30% changes as fast as you can make the water, just as long as all the parameters match

as far as i know all algae can go sexual. but some, like caulerpa are more inclined to. thats why people run the lighting 24/7 when using it
