Are you sure that it has not molted? The molt is a "replica" of the shrimp. They tend to hide for a while afterwards, so it may seem like it is dead.

Aye, sometimes they molt and hide for a day or two while their new outer shell hardens, they are pretty defenseless right after a molt.

I'm pretty sure it's dead, it doesn't look like the usual molting. There's meat-like looking stuff in the remaining shell :(

it might have just died and the hermits eat the remains

shrimpppppp
Actually, that's pretty difficult to say. :D It's hard to carry the "p" sound that long.
Well, I don't believe any of your fish did it - but not quite impssoble either.
If it's not a molting, then I like Cutie's response - it just died. Your cleanup crew will probably take care of everything that's edible.
Was it a very large shrimp, maybe died of old age? How long did you have it?
Sorry about the loss. It's difficult to take, I know.

I had a naughty crab before that pinched the legs off of my shrimp then later ate it. So, I'd check out your "reef safe" crabs.
Good luck,
Debra
