heres a list for all you equipment junkies:
skimmer: ASM G3 and G1x (need to upgrade, still deciding)
lights: 3 lumenarcs w/10K xm running on sunlight supply HQI ballasts 250W, probably will add 2 72" URI actinics
calcium reactor: schuran jetstream 1, courtesy of my beautiful girlfriend.
main pump: Sequence Dart(pretty dang strong, need to throttle down)
in tank circulation: 2 tunze 6100's w/multicontroller, and 2 tunze 6080s.
controller: neptune jr. (no comment, haven't hooked it up yet)
chiller: hopfully i wont need one and can get away with 2 fans in the canopy and maybe one in the sump.
heater: titanium 500W
not sure if i'm forgetting anything.

Nice tank. I have one like it, but i wish i had an over flow like yours. My over flow is in one corner. Can't wait to see some pics with the lights on. Good job.

i think i have too much flow going through the sump....i seem to have micro bubble problems. and that's w/o a skimmer.
anyways, i had a little time to put some liverock in. this is a little less than half. believe it or not there are only 4 pieces of large lr and about 4 small ones.

What kind of valves are those in the 3rd picture and above the return pump?
john37
07/24/2006, 04:12 PM
thanks guys.
mfinn, they're check valves for the return. the holes for the return are lower than the overflow and so if i didnt have them and turned off the main pump the water would drain until those holes and my sump would overflow. i did the one above the pump just incase one of the other two fails.
mfinn
07/24/2006, 04:17 PM
What brand are they? How much were they?
I usually is check valves myself. I like to use the wye check valves.

Beautiful. That's the exact dimensions I'm going to use for my next tank. How do you like Bare Bottom? I currently have a DSB in my 90 and I don't really like it.
john37
07/24/2006, 06:36 PM
mfinn, i dont really know what brand they are. i picked them up from a LFS i think they ran around $10-$15. 2 are 1" and the one above the pump is 1.5".
waxxiemann- i really like bb. Not because of the way it looks but how easy it is to keep. because i have no sand i can have 4 tunzes and not worry about a sand storm if one fell down. makes cleaning a lot easier, i can just suck up the detrius when i'm changing water. another thing i like is that when setting up the tank the sand clouds the water and i ended up playing w/the rock a lot and moving things around, there was no sand to get stirred up and if i was to ever take my tank apart for an emergency or to move i wouldnt worry about stirring the bed and having the rock that's buried be nasty. i love your quote btw.

John,
Nice job on the tank. I'm in the planning process (for the last 4 months or so) in moving up to a tank exact the size of yours.
Where did you get it, how do you like the depth (30" I believe)?
I've had a 72 bowfront as a display for the past 3 years, and have finally given up on trying to aquascape it properly. Too tall for anything other than cliffs....
Any other info is appreciated. I'm hoping to place my tank order in the next several weeks.
Thanks,
Geoff

Geoff,
thank you. The tank was made by LeeMar. Yes it is 30" wide but if i was to do it again i'd make it a penninsula tank(both long sides viewable) and maybe 6" wider. Also, i like the pendants that aquarium obsessed sells stigfoli...so if i did the lights again(although i love my lumenarcs) i'd do away w/the canopy and use the hanging pendant. Also for the furniture(stand) instead of wood, if you could get a steel stand and have metal skins i think it would be more contemporary. but that's my taste.
gws294
11/14/2006, 12:55 AM
Was your tanks a custom, or does LeeMar make this size as a standard offering... I'd love to do a penninsula tanks, but a have to build a new house first. LOL As to the extra 6", I'm already streching this upgrade "another 6" " I started my request (to the powers that be) for a 48x24x24 and now have ended up with a 72x30x24.. I'd better not press my luck.
I tried to check a web site for LeeMar and couldn't find one. Is there a distributor that carries this brand?
Thanks for the info.
Geoff

John , Your tank looks great. How long have you had the moorish idol and do any of your angels pick at your coral? I have the same size tank and would love to have one of those, along with a regal. What new angels did you get?
Genin
11/14/2006, 09:42 AM
wow that video really showed how great it must be to watch that tank. great job.
john37
11/14/2006, 12:10 PM
Bradley, i'd had that idol for around 6months now. For the first 3-4months he only ate clams from the market but finally he's eating flakes(a lot) i feed him formula 1, 2 and prime reef.
the angels that i have are a Flagfin, Personifier(juvi), scribbled, imperator(juvi) and Regal. I need to get rid of the flagfin and imperator though cuz they're not reef safe. my personifier, scribbled and regal havent picked at anything.

John37,
Nice tank setup. Hopefully one day mine can look as nice as yours. I also have a pair of Idol for 3 weeks and a Regal for 2 weeks. I bought the Regal from that fish place in Cerritos you posted on the socal forums. The idols i purchased from a diver in Hawaii while vacationing and brought them on plane with me. All fishes are in a 60g quarantine tank for food training and disease control. Happy to say Regal and Idols are eating NLS pellets, Mysis, nori and their favorite: Clam on the half shell.
I was wondering how often do you feed your Regal and Idol and whats the majority food they eat.
john37
11/15/2006, 09:51 PM
very very nice cthetoy.
i cant put my idols together cuz the smaller one that's been in the tank for a while beat the crud out of the larger/newer one.
awwww...you're the one that took that regal in the back/right tank. man, i was waiting and gonna take it if it made the weekend. You got quite a deal on it i heard. haha, very nice.

Sorry I took your Regal  I'm sure they will get some more again on Friday's. It's hard to find a good healthy Regal for the price they gave me. Since you've seen it do you know if it was a male or female? Ill post some pictures but this is your thread so Ill post it on the Regal thread soon.
How often do you feed your fish per day? 1x? 2x? 3x?
Thanks again for recommending me to that LFS. You should ask Buddah (the owner) for some referral fees :D

my feeding is random....some days i feed once a day if busy, others 3-4 times and sometime i dont get a chance to feed them. but about 75% of the time i try to feed 3x a day.

Hey, well i've decided to go a new route w/my tank.
one reason being that many of my wild sps rtn'ed on me. most of the frags i got from reefers are ok. i also sold my beloved MI since he picked at some lps and clams. I also sold my angels(except for the regal).
i had to move some corals to my frag tank and i took out a bunch of rocks as well for a more open look. Tank looks pretty empty right now but i'll soon move more corals back in.
i added some flasher wrasses as well and changed all my bulbs to 20k radiums instead of the 10k xm's.
here's a pic, looks empty but you can see the rockwork.

you always have the sweetest fish. i think if i was in your shoes i would've kept all the fantastic fish and keep only corals they don't nip at. is that basically a fowlr? lol
john37
12/02/2006, 01:31 AM
if i kept all those fish yeah, probably woulda turned into a flowr...man i reallly love fish, i was actually thinking of setting up a 180gal fish only but i've decided, to cut back on the big spending.
ez....are you stalking me? :D
cthetoy
12/02/2006, 01:32 AM
How do you like the 20k Radiums? Are they SE or DE? I have XM 10ks SE and I am looking to change them out as well for a more bluer look. Do you think your wild SPS RTN because of the bulb or your water parameters?
john37
12/02/2006, 01:42 AM
i believe radiums only come in SE.
i think they RTN'd because my alk was realllllyyyyy low cuz i was being stupid and lazy and didnt set up my CA reactor(it's set up now BTW) i dont think the lights had much to do w/it. also, wild colonies dont seem to have that great of a track record.
i'll let my tank settle down for a couple more weeks and then i'm gonna ask my GF to buy me some frags for Christmas....hahah
she always gets me fish stuff as gifts cuz i dont care about anything else. so far she's bought me countless fish, oregon tort, and my schuran CA reactor. freakin awesome
