View Full Version : Faster Cycling with higher water temp? (82-86F)

Everytime I have heard about someone cycling some of their live rock they usually always mention that they are using a heater in the tank.

If one were to cycle their tank with live rock with higher temps (between 82-86), would it cycle faster?

Is it better to do this?

You should have a heater anyway. And I have never heard of this.

No one really knows, but I don't see the point of keeping the tank at a higher temperature for the curing process. I target 82 F as the base temperature for my tanks anyway.

Bertoni are you talking about your main tanks or just your live rock curing tanks?

Personally id keep it at a constant temp. heres what im thinking. i dont think a higher temp will cycle faster, but im going to pretend it does for a second.
So we'll say that a higher temperature results in more bacteria and a faster cycle. so you have your high levels of bacteria and are ready to "start" your tank. you drop the temp significantly down to the right temp for a tank. one can assume that this rapid drop to a lower temp would cause a die off in bacteria because thier home is less hospitable. so you would not have as good of a bacteria-base, possibly resulting in a mini cycle when you add species.
so even if this "does work" id still steer clear of it. cycling doesnt take that long any way. this is a hobby of patience.

I see and understand. Good point. But does anyone know that bacteria dies with tep drops of around 4-6 degress (86-80)?

Currently I have my tank cycling at 84 F and wondered if I should start bring it down slowly this week to get it to the target temp of 75 (H. Kuda tank).

Thanks!

All my tanks are at 82 F as the base temperature.

I don't think that small a change in temperature will do much to the bacterial population.

Hey Bertoni or anyone:

Do you think I should do a 50% water change a week before I add my seahorses.

Since I am in week 3 of cycling, and I will start doing my water parameters test this week, would it be wise to change about 50% of the water after a cycle?

I was talking to the owner of a LFS and he told me to lower my temp because algea and bacteria will grow faster he also told me to use a little less salt while my first cycle.

thats preety good advice considering that most seahorse keepers have been telling me to have lower temps and lower salinity. I guess I'll start dropping it slowly.

I would do some water changes before adding the animals. Maybe a couple of 25% changes, to avoid stress on anything in the live rock.
