I want to make one for my tank becuase I am sick of gurgling. I understand how to make one, just not totally how they work. 1 how do you start siphon first time? and I would really like a complete overview of how they work.
Thanks,
Patrick

Do you have a hangon box or a drilled tank?

they will start the siphon on their own, all you have to do is find the right sized hole to put in the end cap so you dont get the flushing effect

Personally, I prefer the stockman standpipe. Quieter, less room... nice. Here's a good link on making one for a few dollars...

I tried the stockman and it didn't work very well for me. That link you posted though is a mod to the stockman, does this seem to work better?

Well, this is the first one I've built, so I can't compare it to the original. I didn't even realize it was a mod. But it's quiet as a mouse. I love it.

i get absolutely no noise from my dursos, all i can hear is the water falling into the overflow

I was getting some from the hangon overflow, but with a drilled tank I am not getting any noise either besides the water falling. I think I am going to make it a little taller to lessen that as well.

Sorry to hitchhike on your thread, but whats the best way to build durso's or stockman's in an overflow box? Ive wanted to quiet my tank down for awhile but havent seen any pics on how to do it with boxes. Thanks

In the tank? The current tank I have came with just a pipe for the overflow, I made a durso and put it on the top of it. I don't bother gluing it since it's underwater anyway. You may need to if your sump can't handle it draining to it. If you do need to glue it you would have to put it together outside the tank and then put it in and tighten the bulkhead.

Also, check the links listed above, some information in there.

I firured out that the durso wont work, it is too big, so Ive decided to use this one. Looks like it will work Hofer Gurgle Buster (http://mywebpages.comcast.net/domitron2/HGB/HGB_construction.html)
Any comments on it?
