I am trying to lower my nitrates in my 46 gallon tank and wanted to get macroalgea to help - I know culerpa (many different forms) help but it spreads aggressively right? Is there one that does not spread as aggressively, i.e. Red Mangrove propagule? Or does that also spread aggresively? If I get culerpa how often do I prune it so it doesn't spread as aggresively?

Chaetomorpha works pretty good.

If you confine the Caulerpa to a refugium, it can be fine. I grow Caulerpa racemosa and Chaetomorpha in my refugia.

I used to add Caulerpa to my main tank to feed the fish, but the current fish seem not so good at eating it all, and it has become established there, unfortunately. But if you keep it in a refugium, it won't typically get into the main tank.
