my nassarius snails came today and ive had some things come up since i ordered and then the other guy that ordered with me is now decided to get out of the hobby so now i have way more snails than i need at this time, so i need to get rid of alot. they are about 1/2 inch nassarius snails. ive seen them online going for as much as 1.99 each! i will let these go for 50cents each and possible trade for some lps or mushrooms frags. ill be around all day friday

Are these snails good for BB tanks or do they perfer a DSB? I was looking into getting some for my tank to eat detritis and algae off the glass.

xdusty6920 thats alot of snails in a coolwhip bowl, you should only need 3-4 in there since they recommend having 5-7 per gallon.

I'd like to get a couple off of you to try (haven't had any of those yet). I know it doesn't exactly diminish your stock however hehe.

I am going to _TRY_ to make the meeting.

Are they Nassarius Vibex-- or the so called Nassarius Obsoleta (actually Ilyanassa obsoleta)

The difference--

Vibex

Obsoleta
http://www.calacademy.org/research/izg/SFBay2K/Illyanassa_obsoleta62838C.jpg

Obsoleta are supposedly carnivores rather then detrivores and come from temperate waters so may not thrive at reef temps???

tabndust

not sure since they dont look like either of those, they are darker.

tabndust

i just looked and the paper that came with them lists them as detrivores

Where did you get them from? Maybe we can figure it out that way.

my vibex look like the top pic--- ridges on the shell and very light colored.

kellzbellz

supposedly that is the best way to tell... what spuds725 said... if they have ridges on their shells they are true nassarius spp. and if not, they are in the same family as nassarius but are actually more appropriately classified as a whelk

more pics of obsoleta-- http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&safe=off&q=Ilyanassa+obsoleta+&btnG=Search

some people claim obsoleta are ok to use in our tanks-- I honestly don't know if they are harmful or not-- until I get a definitive answer I only will use Nassarius Vibex as sand sifting snails

i just called the guy that i got them from and left him a message.
they are from a store in florida. theres no website just the store. we were in there earlier this year and he gave me his number.

if they are obsoleta. what are they good for. why wouldnt they be good in a reef. what i just found on them was that they eat left over food and algaes like cyno and sift sand. isnt that why you would want them?

kellzbellz

if they are obsoleta then they live in much cooler water and would only live a year or so in an aquarium. they will eat algaes (probably not cyano) and leftover food, but primarily algae based food, not fish based. they are also known to be predatory. if you do a google search you can find a lot of opposing views on them and their benefits and potential risks

Kellz summarized, essentially everything I've read about them-- they may deplete your sand bed of micro fauna--

I've only read anecdotal info about these snails-- there was a very heated thread on the vibex/obsoleta debate a while ago-- got locked as it got a little out of hand-- I never knew people to be so passionate about snails...

here is a good read on obsoleta i just found

lol yeah ive heard about this whole obsoleta/vibex thing lol. there are dozens if not hundreds of nassarius species out there. vibex is not the best of them, only the most common. the type i have (and i believe they are the same tabndust is describing) are completely black almost with a few small specs of light brown on some of them. (much darker then the pics above).
ive had vibex and they did indeed clean up any scraps of meat that made its way to the sandbed.
i can say that the nassarius i have are extremely reef safe. ive had them in my system for about 3.5 months without any evidence of any damage on any, lps, softys, or sps. they are completely unaware of my corals. im so confident i have them in a display full of exotic and expensive corals. i also have them in my frag tank with tons of tiny delicate frags and they dont even acknowledge them. i know people love nothing more then a debate but im yet to see a snail hop on a scolymia and start taking bites lol.

oh almost forgot. this is a system kept at 79.5 degrees

ok the guy at the reef store is now researching what he is saleing since he said he orders and sales them as just Nassarius snails. he said that he was told they live best under 80 degrees. and that they are reef safe. i have not found anything that worries me about them. so some will be going in my current setup and i will probably get more for the new setup.

yes dusty sounds like we might have the same thing.

if anybody is still interested let me know

Probably Obsoleta. They're the kind that Larry was selling at the swap. They're good snails. In addition to being detrivores like the Vibex, they will also eat algae off the glass. The do better in cooler reefs however. I had some in a reef for well over a year, and for the most part it was kept at 81.5 most of the time, but they are colder water snails.
