My tank probably isn't the best example of a thriving BB tank because I have been battling Acro flat worms and lost a ton of nice stuff :( but overall the tank still looks decent.

Are these them? I hope you don't mind me posting them. I just want people to be able to see them without much work. You know us reefers are lazy.

i think it would be pointless for greg to show his tank since this is show your bare bottum tank thread and he dosnt have a BB tank. why cant u show your tank? and what method have you been doing for ten years?

well lets see all those succesful tanks. i cant wait. Yippee, more reason for me to go BB if i get to see those tanks

Here are some pics of my barebottom just so you won't think BBer's won't post pics of their tanks Greg;)
FWIW I personally don't feel like any established method works "better" than any other. IMO it's what works best for you:)

The tank was a SSB for the first year of it's life(after transfer from another tank with a 3" sandbed). Even with biweekly siphoning of the SSB it was impossible to keep detritus from finding it's way under the rocks and nitrate levels had crept up around 10(with no obvious ill effects, I just didn't like the levels) before I took the sand out. It's been BB for several months now and will stay that way when I move it into a 120:D
thanks, Chris

DANG I love this tank. It is so unique compared to the "norm". Little rock, very open arrangement, and a concentration on a small number of corals to grow out into big colonies rather than ton of corals that need to be kept bonsai'ed. I can't wait to see this tank 2-3 years down the road.:)

Just wanted to revive this thread. I'm thinking about going bare bottom on my next tank and wanted to see some more examples of what an established BB tank looks like. Since i plan to stare at this thing a few hours a day, it had better be appealing to my eyes. From what i've seen on the new BB tanks, they don't look very eye appealing to me. However, i'm willing to sacrifice that if in the long run their looks improve once established. So, please.....show off your established BB tank!!

Part of the problem is that many of us reefers change tanks and upgrade/move/divorce (not me)/catastropic failure, etc often. When I finally had my 200g BB running 5 yrs, it was the most beautiful tank I could imagine with tons of coraline on the bottom and the tank looked awesome. When a BB-ottomer moves a tank or upgrades, it does take a while for the new tank to start looking good. Very different that someone who simply slaps 4" of sand in their new tank.

Here's a pic of my 3 month old BB.

Here are a few shots of my 150 from early October at the one year point. All corals are from frags.

do you guys populate the glass bottom with other corals to kinda hide the fact that there's no sand?

I do not. Coraline is really starting to take off on the bottom since the Oct pictures. I do not feel the tank looks bad or unnatural without sand.

i try to keep the more aggressive corals on the bottom, so my prized pieces are not in their range, such as my hydnopora, tulip anemones, rock anemones and fast growing GSP. The other corals i keep on the bottom are either stressed, new, or low light such as my plates, lobo, and tubastreas.

Yeah it's in large reef tanks under our 500 gallon

The green slimer grew 2"- 4" a month. It was almost 30" when I started fragging it, the left side got more of the fragging. It would have grown to about 4' tall in 5 years, if I hadn't started hacking on it.. Started out as a 1" frag as most of my corals. I thinned the coral out about 4 months ago, took about 40# out. So the reef would grow in more even, and the demands on Cal and Alk were unbelievable...
