View Full Version : How do you frag hard to frag caps??

I have a purple cap that grows in large flat plates that are hard to break by hand without it breaking into tons of pieces. What other options do I have to frag it? Taking it out of the water is not an option. I don't want to frag it but its about 1/2" away from a ORA tort branch. What would happen if I let them touch, I think the tort would win but I'd be afraid the cap would grow around the tort and start bothering it. Anyone tried the little exacto saw blade?

Here's a recent pic. You can kinda make out the tort branches in the background.

Guy I know uses garden shears. You don't know what you're going to get, but it's a renewable resource.

Use a razor blade and you can carve it out fairly easy. Either that or score it a few times and it will break generally where you scored it.

An old pair of scissors allways worked well for me, but not perfect by any means. If you want exact you will most likely have to take it out and use some sort of saw like a dremel of a tile cutting bit.

Well I kinda figured that. I was just wondering how they work. I just searched tile saws on google and all I can find is motorized ones.

Well I just fragged it using a razor blade to score it then break it. The area I was fragging was about 4x1" I and I felt like I would be more than lucky if it would break into 2 pieces. I ended up with a 2x1" piece, a aprox 1x1 and about 4 smaller pieces. I just glued them to some small rocks. Thanks for the help.

A tile saw would be for out-of-tank fragging - but given you can get very thin diamond blades for it - probably the best method of cutting thick/LPS types.

Personally, for friable stonies - I prefer a dremel w/ diamond wheel - but that's outside of the tank.
