Leather coral's base eroding?

I've had a leather coral for a while now and the last few days I've noticed that the base has turned white and seems to be eroding away. Is this a disease, or something else? I'm really worried about the amount of loss I've seen.

sounds bad. need a picture to be precise. in any case leathers do commonly get all ugly looking for a while then come back better than ever. what you decribe sounds like a bacterial infection. try giving him an iodine dip. this will help. if it looks like it is shedding away skin then dont worry as stated above this is how leathers are and grow. its a healthy growth period that looks ugly.
