View Full Version : can someone id this wrasse??

He was sold to me about 3 month's ago as a deap sea wrasse. I know that name when i brought it was made up. when i got him he was 1" and he is now 3". I never had a good pic of him since he swim's in like a wavie motion and never stop's. I swiched tank's so i was able to catch him and take pic's of him. What do you think he is?

It looks like a Red Tail Tamarin Wrasses. They usually don't do that well.

Female of the species. I have a male of the species and so far so good. He's eating albeit it takes some time for him to eat as this species is a chewer so I have to make sure he gets his fill as well as the others.

that's what i though he was and he's doing great but i just dosn't look like him 100% i beleave. Some ppl tell me i might have a hybird.

Don't feel special. It's not a hybrid. It's Anampses melanurus. Do a Google search to compare pics.

i did so and i don't agree it's a anampses melanurus all pic's that came up showed it having a yellow tail. and the only one with a white tail showed a different white spot pattern and is jet black this guy is a redish black.

I would not go by the coloration of that individual, alone, as I believe that it is Anampses lineatus. A. lineatus is extremely variable in color (from brownish to pitch black in juveniles) and is the only species that exhibits that dashed-line pattern, which only juveniles and females possess. All similar species either yellow tails or rounded spots (as opposed to dashes).

I collect the red tailed species in Hawaii I would say with 99.99% confidence that it is something else. It is a female of the species thats for sure. If they behave anything like the red tails, they are not deep water (below 120ft). They are most common from 40-90ft. If I may be so bold, what did you pay for him? pm me.

alikatoesd--We know for sure it isn't the red-tail Tamarin.
