Do i need mechanical filtration for a reef tank?

i'm setting up a 55g reef tank with a 30g refugium. i've got lots of live rock and a DSB with a good big skimmer. do i need any sort of other filtration? mechanical? i know canister filters i hear are nitrate factories but what will removed the larger parts in the water and the algae on the botton(after i've cleaned it off the glass)

A skimmer and a refugium will do.

Some people use a filter sock on their drain when they clean, and then remove it after most of the detritus and whatever has cleared. If you leave it in your system it can become another one of those nitrate factories if you don't clean it religiously.
