View Full Version : Flame Retardant on Polyester Batting

I went down to get another few yards of polyester batting today for filter material. I usually do this every few years. This time the only thing they had was "Sew Perfect" 100% polyester bonded batting, marked as Flame Retardant (Item RSP848)

I don't recall it being marked as "Flame Retardant" before, and am concerned that maybe it has chemicals on it now.

Definitions for "Flame Retardant":
Foam-Tech: (http://www.foam-tech.com/glossary.htm) A substance, which is added to a polymer formulation to reduce or retard the tendency to burn.
JMCatalysys: (http://www.jmcatalysts.com/pct/marketshome.asp) An added substance which inhibits the initiation and/or spread of flame.
Bloomer Plastics: (http://www.bloomerplastics.com/capabilities-glossary.html) Reactive compounds and additive compounds to render a polymer fire resistant. Reactive compounds become an integral part of the polymer.

And of course, the Wiki: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flame_retardant) Flame retardants are materials that inhibit or resist the spread of fire. Naturally occurring substances such as asbestos as well as synthetic materials such as PBDEs and PCBs have been used in this capacity.

Anyone ever run across information on this?

Guess no-one else has had this issue yet. I've decided not to use it at this time. I've got some foam filter pad material I can use, it's just more expensive.

I'm also cleaning the two pieces of my old floss that I have left daily now so I can re-use them.

I certainly wouldn't use it if that was your inquiry. Lord knows the chemicals used to obtain flame retardent features.

you can buy polyfilter from grainger. i believe i purchased 20 pcs pre cut 24x24 cost was around $25 + FREE shipping. it is the bonded type. could see no dif between it and what the lfs was hustling for $4 for an 18x12. called the manufacturer first and no flame retardent was applied.

its gone up in price (about 50 cents each) since i bought mine.

but one box yielded 96 10"x10" pieces for me. i change it every other week. thats 3.69 years of filter. and never a reuse.

I agree Hot-

Thanks Doug- That stuff looks perfect, and cheaper than what I was getting from Aquatic Eco.

Do you use the 1" thick stuff?

This looks cool too:

OK, I ordered the 90' section of it. Should keep me in batting for a while. :) I'll post pictures when it comes in.
