I have a Brownbarred Goby that I have had for 4 years now. He is really starting to slow down. He was about 4" when I got him and is 6" now. His eating habits have slowed and he is losing weight. I have not lost a fish or added a fish in 3 years. Age you think?

Species? The common name isn't helping me out much.

Amblygobius phalaena is the name.

Ok, that does clear it up nicely. This species should live for at least 5 years if it has everything it needs (i.e. plenty of substrate infauna). Generally, if they do not have enough of these small animals, they will eventually starve, even if they are accepting prepared foods. Without knowing how old it was to begin with, it is difficult to say if old age was the culprit.

Thanks for the information. I have had him for 4 years, so he must be around that 5 year mark. He was always very healthy and does eat prepared foods very well. I have a 4" sand bed that he stirs on a regular basis. I'll keep feeding him a little extra, but not looking good.
