Looking to see how often folks here change water on their reef tanks. Feel free to comment as well. Thanks.

How much water do you change each time?

Thanks,

Dave

i change once a week, but doesnt need maybe once a month, i think i am just wasting salt and time.....i have also been overfeeding so i feel obligated to change the water more often...

I created two polls. I didn't want to have so many choices that it got confusing. I get confused easily you know.

I usually change when the green tint of the water obliterates out the green tint of the algae. lol

5-10% every 2 weeks.

I would like to change once a week (setting up a system in my new layout that will make water changes as simple as turning (3) valves and turing on (2) switches to change out 50 gallons of water weekly). As it stands now I do 15% every 6 weeks.

Hi Dave:
Yes I can understand that. :D
just note that correlation between volume and how often will not be possible. You will know how much we change or how often we do it but not how much how often.
In any case it is good info.

If you want to devise one that shows how often and what volume of water to be changed, go for it and I will tidy this up later. I would like to see both ideas as well. I definitely think the changing of saltwater in the reef tank is essential.

Last month I started doing 40-50% weekly water changes with my sumpless/skimmerless 30gal cube. The results have been excellent. Before I was doing 20% every other week and while I was able to sustain SPS frags, there was almost no growth. The corals have grown more this month than an entire year. I will be increasing the water change amount each week until I see no more benefit.

15% weekly or every other week as I get lazy lately.

I do my 15% weekly but the last 2 times it's been 2 weeks.

I try and change it twice a week. Around 45 gallons out of a 275 gallon system

where would every 3-6 months fit in?

I am sure you already tried and will not be easy, with a single polling the choices would be at least doubled. By the way I concur, water changes are important.

I guess Im in the never cat. In 15 months I have performed 3 water changes, once when I was changing the tank around, once on a overflow, and once because I figured it was time

I change my dwarf seahorse 3 gallon tank 50% every 2-3 days!

I change water only when I'm bored or I screw something up, in the last 1 1/2 years I've done 3 water changes of about 20 gallons each.If everything is looking good why change it.

Same here. I do two changes a week. I do this because I don't dose anything at all. To me it's like replacing trace elements and dosing along with some nutrient export.

For those that never change water, are you keeping corals of any kind? And if so, what kinds? And what is your bio-load like?

I change 5 gallons a week or 10 every other week on my sumpless 29, depending on how busy i am. i change 20 gallons every other week on my 75 (90 gal total volume with sump).

Somehow i think the people who dont do routine waterchanges are the same that go way overdue for an oil change.. but thats just a guess.

I did a 15 gallon Change one time on my 240. but it was only setup for 1.5 years.

I'm trying to be a little better with the new tank.. I have already done 20 gallons on this tank, and plan on doing a 30 gallon some time in the next week. and this tank has only been setup for a 1.5 months.
