surge device plumming question

i am planning to install a "toilet flusher" type surge device on my 55 gal. reef. i will be plumming it like a "closed loop" so that it is completely independent from my sump. i'm unsure, however, if i should make the hole size for my overflow to the sump bigger to compensate for the surge or if it wont really matter due to the fact that it will be plummed closed loop style. any input would be great.

Won't matter because you'll just be replacing the water you took from the tank.
