View Full Version : Where does ick come from?

So where does ick come from? I just noticed a few spots on some of my fish. Does it come in from the addition of a fish or can it lie dormant in the live rock or something?

Ich can come from other fish. It can only live for 24 hrs, after it has hatched. The only time you can kill them is when the are in the stage of finding a new host. Their cyst is so strong. Ultraviolet light WORKS VERY NICELY.

I have read that ich is parasite in YOUR system. Since the incoming fish are somewhat weakened, they are then subjected to the new (to them) parasite.

I am not sure of the benefits of quarantine on this, except, it maximizes the health of the incoming stock.

Ich, comes from the ocean. It is always in the ocean and usually on any fish you buy. In the sea it does no harm because of the amount of water and the sparcity of fish but in a small tank the paracite has a very easy time of infecting all of your fish. If you quarintine fish for 6 weeks before putting them in your tank you will never get ich. There are other ways not to get an infection and there is plenty of information here. Just search "Ich"

OK....some my statement is SOMEWHAT true? - in regards to the weakend fish?

Trigger1214, you are correct. Weakened or stressed fish are much more likely to get ich. Healthy fish in breeding condition do not hardly ever get it. Captive fish are very rarely in this condition. If you see fish in the sea they are more lively and intelligent looking than the fish you see in tanks. They always get fresh live food, real sunlight and plenty of exercize. If you don't see your fish exhibiting breeding behavior they may not be as healthy as you think. Healthy fish are always looking to breed.
