I am looking into buying my skimmer soon for my 180g FOWLR. I have been really looking at the ETSS skimmers, but I cant decide which is the one for me. I dont want to spend over 350 if possible. I was also looking at the Coralife SuperSkimmer since everyone loves theres so much. But I am just wondering if the ETSS skimmers are any good basically. Thanks!

I would deffinitely go with the needlewheel, the etss skimmers, are good skimmers, but they have to be constantly adjusted when first starting up, they also require a collection cup with a shutoff device, cause when they do get out of control, they dump piles of water on the floor. I have had my reef devil deluxe fill up a five gallon bucket of water in less than eight hours. They also require a large pump, so you have added electrical costs.

I have had asm, euro-reef and they are both excellent skimmers, set it and forget about them, I love them, I have also heard good things about the coralife skimmers, but have never used them. The added benfit is that they use little electrical power!!!

For an 180 gal, I would go with the asm G3 or G4, and you can also go with a euro-reef, but they are a bit more expensive. Like I said you need to get more advice on the coralife skimmer, since I have never used one.

ETSS skimmers work really well, but the previous points I have to support. They require large pumps and do require a fair bit of adjustment. I will also add that the larger models are a pain to clean. I am a Tunze man myself.

I would also do a needlewheel be it asm, er or one of the other brands out there.

I had a reefdevil delux & I could never get it to work properly on my 90g reef, the asm pulls out a LOT more stuff & is also a LOT easier to setup

Really? What about the ETSS Revolution 500? They are more, but are they better? And what is this about them getting out of control? Isnt that a good thing since they are pulling alot out of the water? But if I did get the ETSS it would be the Deluxe, or the Revloution 500. I think I might be getting the ETSS. So, which model would you suggest. Revolution 500 (alot more), or the Reef Devil Deluxe (alot cheaper)?

i love my etss 600 pro, it was a pain to dial in, but since i have dialed it in, i dont even mess with it, i clean it monthly, it takes about a day or 2 to produce more skimmate, you should have a waste collector, the will shut the skimmer down when it gets full (at 1st i plumbed a 3/4" pipe into a 5 gallon bucket, when the bucket got 2 gallons in it, it was over the opening of the drain piupe, it shut off the skimmer that way.
now i have the collection container (1.5 gals) afet 1 week, i empty it, its so much easier, and smells less too.

I have been looking around at different skimmers, and came across the MRC MR-2 skimmer. It is relativley cheap too! Are these skimmer as good or better than the ETSS skimmers?

You cant go wrong with the evolution 500.Its a powerhouse and very easy to clean.Runs great with sen 900 or mags 9-12.Fits in most sumps.

I have a etss skimmer on the shelf collecting dust. It is really tough to get it working right all the time. I really would recommend a needle wheel skimmer. asm, deltec, euro reef, bubble king. They are also really quiet and energy efficient.

I have an ETSS 1500. I basically hooked up the iwaki plugged it in tuned it for about 5 minutes and haven't done anything else but clean about once a month. Mine won't pull out gallons and gallons but the stuff that it does pull out is extremely dense. Very thick and nasty. I would recommend to evolution between the two. HTH, Tim

But what about the MRC MR-2 skimmer? Are they any better than ETSS skimmers?

Anyone own both brands?

I love my MR-2, it's easy to tune and pulls out a LOT of stuff daily.

It does have the same problems as the ETSS with overflows, you need a waste collector. The beckett needs to be cleaned once a week or so. The skimmer should be cleaned at least that often too. The beckett air intake can be loud, but you can fix that.

All the LFS in my area use ETSS.

That's all I can provide ;)

If you want to spend the mony then Barr Aquatics are by far the best beckett skimmers.

They are too much. I am basically just wondering if beckett or downdraft are better skimmers. Like the pros and cons of each.

I just bought an etss 800 and it's running like a champ. If you have a strong enough pump you could add the beckett injectors to each downdraft tube and pull the bioballs out of there. It would be easy to extend the risers too if needed. But w/o any mods or playing with the air inputs or the collection containers air outlet, it's skimming some gross stuff out real good.

What pump will I need for a Revolution 500?

I think installing a becketts on an etss is like installing props on a 757.

Will installing a beckett on an ETSS-1000 work better. The injector tube is 5 feet tall and was wondering if what I have i good enough already or will a beckett conversion be better

Ok, I am stuck. Since I have the bads of each skimmer (MRC and ETSS). I heard that MRC skimmers are loud, and require high oressure pumps, and I heard the ETSS skimmers are hard to get working and need constant adjusting. So, I am basically trying to decide bewteen the Revolution 500 and the MR-2.

Revolution *cough*

Honestly? I see you have one on your 325. But what makes the Revolution better then the MR-2?

ChickenCannoneer

I had a Revolution running on the 325 before the fuge and hardly any coral. It really did a good job and to be honest they are not hard to tune at all. It takes about 1 minute or so to get it about right and then check it every 15 minutes or so for about an hour. Not a big deal. Also great customer support and very versatile. Good luck, Tim

Do you mean the "Evolution 500" or are you talking about a "Nuther" product??

To help me decide please,

Who is running their ETSS's in sump? Out of sump?

If you had the room to run out of sump would you?

Thanks

In or out?
Anyone

In sump.

DrBDC
04/12/2006, 04:49 AM
Kind of both. I have a stock tank sump and on the one end I have it sitting on a piece of 1'X3' acrylic that is spanning across the width of the sump with it draining back into the sump. That way it is elevated above the sump.

Out of sump. binaryterror- I used to have that one and I ran it one a mag 12 worked great.

I would have to disagree on some of the posts, but maybe with different models, comes different situations. I have used an ETSS 800 for a few years now. Without question the easiest skimmer to dial in and with a constant water level works without every having to adjust it. I also never had it flood like other skimmers I have used. Skimmer is cleaned once a week, waste cup is emptied once a week. Cleaning takes 10-15 mins. Once turned back on, no adjustment is needed. Output is fantastic. Down side it does need a strong pump. Not to say other brands are not as easy to use and maintain.
