I have a tall, narrow tank (12"w, and 18" tall), and was thinking about arranging the rocks into a U shape of sorts. Let's see if I can explain this one... :p

You know how lots of people pile their rock so that it rests leaning against the back glass? Well how about doing that, but then also leaning it against both side glass panes as well? So that if you were to view in through the side panes you would only see LR as you would if you viewed the tank from the back. Then there would still be a large swimming area ofr fish in the front centre, and you could proabably fit more lbs per gallon of LR?

Does this make any sense? Does anyone do this?

So, like a bridge between to mounds... Sounds fine. Just try to keep as many holes as possible for swimming and keep the rocks off as much of the sand/floor. I used PVC cut 1/2 inch and cemented rocks to them creating plenty of room beneath the rocks for animals to roam.

What do you mean keep the rocks off the sand? Aren't I supposed to lay the rocks on the glass, and put the sand around them, so that the digging animals don't make the rocks a tumble?

Yes and no. You want water flow over as much sand as possible to lower the dead spots under the rocks. You can’t see the PVC in my tank because its just below the surface and its extremely secure (cemented). I also used plastic hangers cut into small rods and drilled holes in the LR then used some more cement to connect them permanently. There wont be any tumbling in my tank. The more sand that is exposed to water flow the more filtration and less detritus buildup you’ll have. Some people go so far to put returns behind the rockwork to push detritus back to the front as well.
