I bought 10 snails and while looking at the container they are in while floating, I saw some microcrustaceans. They sure do look like isopods. Should I do a freshwater dip on the snails or would that be harmful?

search google for munid isopod. these are good isopods that eat algae.
if they dont look like this, idk what to do. but this gives you something to start with.

Nuke the bag, literally. A small tactical nuclear strike outta do it. Or just give em back to the LFS. I'm not sure how to get rid of them without harming the snails.

It's not the munnid. :(. I saw about three "things" swimming in and around the snails.

I'm not sure what to do. One of them actually swam into a cup. Should I just put the snails in the tank not knowing what the crustaceans are?

http://www.saltwaterfish.com/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=110365&stc=1 this is the Cirolanid Isopod which would be realy bad. of course it comes in different colorations and not just white.

my mass collection of munnid isopods sugest they dont swim. mine drift when they get knocked off the glass, if yours are swimming, then im 99% sure you have the bad ones. take them back to the store! and let them know what kind of monster they have.

That is not what I have. It looked like this, but without those two limbs that look like boxing gloves. http://www.wetwebmedia.com/pericaridanfaqs.htm

So maybe I don't have an isopod at all? Maybe an amphipod?

I can't. No digi camera. This really sucks! Should I just dispose of my $20 worth of snails? Did you check out the pic I posted?

ooh, if thats what you have, then your lucky, i have some to but i had to have the guy hand catch me a dozen to ensure i got them. turns out they hitch-hiked on some live rock as well.
my clownfish doesnt eat them, my corals do when they catch one and my black mollie eats them as well. my clown is a tard, he eats only mysid, brineshrim and flakes. doesnt seem to like food thats kicking.
oh and they make great cleanup critters. i think they eat leftover food. but alot of people say they eat algae. idk either way its a good critter.

the pic wasnt the best but if thats what it looks like, then exelent. if these are all that you can see then sure, keep the whole thing. but dont keep the water they came in. never know what the store puts in their water. trust me i work at one, lots of medication and no waterchanges at my work.

Here's a better pic of what it looks like. Mine looks almost exactly like this. http://www.wetwebmedia.com/amphipodfaqs.htm
God, you scared me with that 1% chance of being good stuff. I almost put the 20 bucks worth of snails out of their misery!

If they look like that pic you posted than all is fine. But I don't want to say anything without seeing a pic of exactly what you have. I wouldn't take the chance.

yea, agreed but sounded like he had isopods. and i went through the same panic after discovering them in my tank. i was lucky enough to find they were safe and actualy good.
i guess i did skip a step in sugesting what it was before seeing any pictures. however i tried to give him pictures to compair to so im not totaly at fualt.
ok, iv stayed up late enough, good night and enjoy your "extras" and your snails.

Thanks for the help. I'm putting the snails in now as we speak. I had to make decision. The pet store is 40 minutes away and is closed right now. I'm so hoping these are just amphipods and are nonparisitic...

Should I worry about what they were? If there was only one or two, what are the chances of them breeding? Wouldn't they just die off?
