Tube coral dying?

Some of my colonies of tube corals are dying - they are turning "ashy" and weathering away - almost like a daffy duck cartoon after being blasted by elmer fudd

I'll try and get some pictures and water measurements tonight, but does anyone have any guesses why this is or what might be done to stop it? the tube corals on my rocks are really pretty, and i'd hate to lose them :(

our readings today:

0 ammonia
0.3 trites
50 trates <-- need a water change, and a better skimmer
~8.1 PH
11.5 dkH <--- seems really high - i'm not dosing anything for it?
460 Cal

might the high alkalinity and calcium be causing it? seems like the opposite would be true...

High nitrites...

Remove the cause--the rock with the tube coral and re-cure it. Your nitrites will never get down unless you remove rock with the die-off...

Do you have hair algae growth with those high nitrate readings?

A few of our tube corals are growing a pure white crust outside of them. Its not epidemic, only certain ones. They are probably just dying.
