cleaning sand

i have a bunch of good reef sand but unfortantly it has been sitting out for about 6 months and is quite dirty(from old setup aquarium) i want to but it in my newly built refugium but i dont want it upset the balence of my tank how should i go about cleaning it out.

i dont want to cure the sand but will if i need to

ok well i guess there isnt a good way, i guess i will just buy some more sand

You can reuse it, but I'd likely pitch it. Getting the tank started with some sand in good condition is worth the cost, IMO, but I don't know how dirty your sand is.
