I'm looking for any infomation or personnel experience with this fish. I have read several different things and I am a little confused on the fish. Any links to good web sites would also be great. Thanks for the help as always.

looking for a potter's angel? I have one --very nice fish, doesnt bother anybody.
had the hardest time getting him to eat --- would only eat of live rock for 4 months, but now accepts flakes. Probably more sensitive to my other fish --I know its time for a water change when he starts to pale up. but, he's real easy to keep as long as he is healthy and eating. I'd buy a neon goby to keep parasites off him --it will present itself for cleaning. thumbs up for me

I saw a 10 cm long Potter's Angel at a retailer in Kyoto some three years ago. It was a blue-black phase that has been collected at the depth of more than 60 meters of off Kona Coast.
It was thriving well and the owner was keeping it in a larger reef for three years ! I think that it is a hardy fish.

If you want a quality potter collected properly by the diver contact Brian at http://s138267547.onlinehome.us/home.html. If he doesn't respond right away don't worry. He just got back from a real coold deep diving collection trip, but should be collecting Hawaiin species in the next week. My pair of potters ate hours after comming directly from Hawaii. Great fish. They love to browse on algae covered rocks. Also they seem to really like frozen cyclopezee.
Mr. Tanaka: Glad to see you on the boards. Good to have someone with your knowledge and experience here. That blue/black variety seems to be very rare.

Here is the photo of the blue-black phase of Centropyge potteri, 10cm at a retailer in Kyoto. It commanded a very high price, and no somebody obtained it sometimes ago and he soon sold it to another person, but finally it returned to the shop.
It was one of the two specimens collected off Kona Coast; another was shipped to the US, I hear. Anyway this species is a great addition to any kind of tank.
See my photo of it in menmbers' photo gallery 'Angelfish'.

My experience has been totally different from yours (with my current potters...first one, the same)
I bought one potters from an LFS, about 1.5" long, $65. It lasted about a month, I could never get it to eat, and it was always skittish.
The one I have now, i bought at about 3", for $25 from someone breaking down their tank. It eats flake, it eats everything. Its also a LOT more agressive than the old one. It spends its time trying to eat my clowns eggs, and is usually harassing them. It doesnt really have problems with anything else, and has been totally reef safe.
So thats my advice: If you can get one from an established tank, jump all over it. If not, theyre tough to get to eat. But once you get over it, they seem to be really hardy.

2 expieriences with potters. #1 --didn't make it past a few days #2............ had for a long time I think it may have died of old age?? both were model citizens. #2 was a pig. ate anything.

The key to keeping a Potter's Angel is that your tank needs to be established enough that it can sustain the fish until it learns to eat frozen, flake, etc. I made the mistake of adding one to my tank after the cycle had been completed. Needless to say it did not eat anything I placed in the tank and was very skittish, which led me to believe it was not healthy to begin with. I questioned if it had been properly quarantined at the vendors facility, or if it was eating prior to being shipped to me. The color quickly faded and it died shortly thereafter. It lasted about a week. I will try another in a year or two once the tank is fully established. Good luck if you acquire one.

IMO, the trick is to have a tank that can susstain the angel without having to feed it. It can be difficult to get a good one, but once established, they are the best reef angel you can get. Mine never bothered anything, LPS, softies, one Acro at the time and clams. He was a model citizen.

I saw one of these come available on a wholesaler's list a couple of years ago for $600 wholesale... Great photo Mr. Tanaka and great to see you at RC... Here's the shot from your gallery for all to see... what a fish! Also, there is a shot of one of these in Scott Michael's Reef Fishes Volume 3... a must for all angelfish nuts...

Thanks all; I took four shots of this unusual fish (Scott Michael's Reef Fishes Volume 3 shows one of them) at the retailer, and it was active but very peaceful in a reef-set. Well, how to show photos here ??? I failed to do .....

H. Tanaka: To show a picture in your gallery right click on the picture you want. Copy the URL address. Then go back to the post. Click on "Post reply", don't use the quick reply. Then click on the "IMG" button. There will then be a pop up in the top left corner. Paste the URL address you copied from your picture and then click ok.

H. Tanaka: Sorry, I left out one step. When you right click on the picture click on "properties", located on the bottom of the pop up. When you do you will get another pop up in the top left corner. Copy that URL address. Sorry for the confusion.

I would have to agree with the consensis of this thread. I had a 120 for my Potter's to forage for food. It was only 4-5 months until I saw it eat a frozen mysis shrimp. Thank god for hair algae!! LOL

nbd13,
No it was not mine, and I photographed at a retailer in Osaka while I was sightseeing. It was a peaceful specimen and accepted foods well. It is the only specimen imported to Japan.

I just picked up a "normal" Potteri the other day from an LFS. That was a Tuesday evening. Went home for lunch on Thursday, started eating when I fed the other fish. Thursday night was eating like a pig. Not shy at all. Granted I have only had him for a couple of days, but it is doing great so for.

Todd, sounds like yours will do great.
I think these fish are brought up too quick or something, becuase it seems to be that they either come in and have no chance, or they do great.

Thanks Rich, I hope so. I went home for lunch again today. He (or she) is a little pig. It is still getting used to the tank, but is out and about more often.
The tank itself is over 6 years old (though I did just move it -- but the rock was wet the whole move -- only an hour drive). It is a 58g with a 20g sump. I would say about 60- 70 lbs of live rock. I have a pair of sabbleback clowns and a LMB in the tank.
