Yeah, yellow, less space requirement as well.
I think blue recc. is like 100- 135 gal. min.
Yellow is like 75 gal. min.

many people do. if you get one small, then it will take a year or two to out grow the 55g. but it will out grow it. im not going to say yes you should or no you shouldnt. im not wanting to start a tang police riot :D

Agree w/ paintbug, many do and a small yellow in a 55 isn't terrible IMO
Just know that eventually it will outgrow it and yeah, you may get some grief from some people.

I have a yellow tang in my 55g, but I'll probably be looking for a new home for him in the near future. More likely than not, I'll trade him in for another smaller one. They're great fish. Mine was extremely skittish when I first got him, but they're very active and add a lot of personality to the tank. Of course, being active is one of the reasons a fully grown tang needs so much space.

I had one for about 3-4weeks. He ate a little bit of frozen bloodworm, and plenty of nori. Then Friday night, I noticed he had ich. It was 9pm, so I couldnt buy any medicine. Later that same night, he was covered with it. I removed him from the tank in a seperate container with air and a tiny bit of flow. I put a chunk of garlic in the water since I read that was good. He never made it though. He died about 12 hours after I first noticed the ich. I really liked him too! I didnt know they could die that fast.
