I had a about 20 lbs, or more, of live rock that was in an old tank of mine. Without going into a long story, I tossed it into the woods next to the house about a year ago. Now, I am having second thoughts about being able to use it as base rock. It has been lying on the ground, freezing through a Maine winter and seems to be totally devoid of any type of life. I was thinking, can I boil this stuff in a kettle for a bit and then wash it off in fresh water and use it? It's no big deal, but I thought it would be the frugal way to have some rock on hand for various uses...

thanks,

Bill

I left mine set outside here in Indiana for about 6-8 months.
Set it in water for about 2-3 weeks changing it every couple of days, then used it in a african chiclid tank for over 2 years. It has been in my reef tank now for 3 years and you can not tell it from other live rock. I simply seeded the tank with a few lbs. of live rock
to get it going again.
