Hey I was looking for some help, not sure I understand your reply, "why bother asking a question if you know you won't like th answer", thought this was a site where I would receive some friendly help.
I have built up the tank over a couple of months, put in live rocks, salinity fine, rocks cured, phosphate fine, nitrate and nitrite Ok ammonia 0 got cleaner shrimps, hermit crabs and turbo snails, all doing well, some corals in, and 2 clown fish.
Was told starfish was common starfish, quite hardy, reputable dealer closed today so was looking for some help on here.

Oh dear, you can tell I'm new to this, but I'm learning quickly.
Thank you for letting me know this, I was quite upset as this was my first reply to my first posting.

it is probably the following:
Serpent and Brittle Sea Stars are popular additions to reef aquariums that contain live sand as they constantly stir the sand bed and provide oxygen to the beneficial bacteria living in the sand.
If they have long thin arms, it would be either one of those. Id say its fine that they are in the sand. most are nocturnal.. so when you turn off your lights at night, he'll prob come out

He is light in colour like the coral sand, and has long thin arms.
Got a couple of books out of the library today but other than mentioning what Starfish did for the tank, didn't have any info on their habits.
Thank you so much, I will try and turn the lights out and see if I can see him.
Just worried about him. I was told to acclimatize him slowly to the water which I did, perhaps I'm worrying unnecessarily.
The water tests seem fine and everything else is thriving.
Appreciate your help.

I can guess it is a common Sand Sifting Starfish. They live in the sand. It might go months before you see it again. Did it look like this guy?

The sand sifting star is what i was thinking.
I have never seen sny others bury in the sand.
If it is a sand sifting star, it will likely die, and is a species best avoided.

I've had my sand sifting star for over a year now and it's doing a wonderful job keeping the sand clean. Also, it leaves the corals, etc. alone. It only crawls along the bottom, and occassionally up the side of the glass almost to the top then falls to the bottom, turns itself over, crawls off and goes about it's business. They're cool IMO and do good cleaning.

She said thin arms... maybe a serpent?
In any case, Elaine, mine did the same thing. I hardly see him at all.
