i just purchased 2 each ice cap variable speed fans and cut holes in my wooden canopy and installed them....they are VERY nice, but they seem to make a slight humming sound...they are not rubbing on anything, they are just sorta loud enough to be noticed.....is there anything i can do to quiet them down, or oil them ?

By a "slight" humming sound, that is perfectly normal. They are not totally silent. Make sure the fan sensor is not real close to any MH lamp isfusing one as it will cause the fan speed to run at max.

if i am standing 20' away...should i hear the fans ?

Very possible. If there are no other noises or distractions in the room and the fan is running at idle, you may very well hear a slight hum.

does ice cap make any other fans that are less noisy ?
Did you get the 80 or 120MM sized fans. The 120MM are around 4.5" and run with less sound and move a lot more air.
Are the fans inside or outside the hood? We recommend placing them inside the hood and blowing room air into the canopy area. If you're running fluorescent lamps, it's a good idea to run the fans when they're on even if the tank water temperature is not an issue. MH lamps run best when they run hot, but that same conditions eat into a fluorescent lamp's life and output.

120MM is what i have........i cut holes in my canopy and put the fans in the hole.......if i blow room air into the canopy, then where does all the heat go to ?
I promise it will find a way out, unless your hood is airtight.
