I have been to melevs reef but I still need some help in figuring out how this thing really works. I am thinking about installing one on my 210 tank. Your help is appreciated. Thanks

a closed loop is a drain from the tank (from a bulkhead or overflow) that is piped directly into a pump, then the outflow of the pump is directed right back into the tank, with a few different outlets to create turbulent flow.
Calfo has a great design for a manifold return that you may like, just do a search.

A closed loop is just a way to eliminate pumps being in the tank. No more powerheads if you will. To explain it, take the back of your tank, drill a couple holes and put a pump OUTSIDE the tank. Plumb one hole to the intake of the pump and plumb the outlet of the pump back to the tank. This way, you get all the flow you need and nothing inside the tank.

Here is the back side of a tank with a closed loop. And an intriquate one at that.

And here is the underside of it

Also by using a closed loop system your elliminate most of your head pressure loss making your pump more efficient.
