Keep the air out of the u-tube as much as possible. If you see a buble starting to form in the u-tube, redo the siphon as soon as possible. Other than that, I don't know of much you can do.

is it a u tube or a cpr? u tubes usually work pretty well, cpr ive heard loose syphon sometimes, they also sell small pumps that keep the over flow primed, if you worried about it you can look into that option.

I have a u tube overflow. I just drilled a small hole in the top of the U tube and stuck some standard air tubing in it, then siliconed around the hole. I ran the air tubing to one of my powerheads (penguin 1200 or something like that) and stuck it in the venturi opening. My overflow never loses suction as the power head will constantly pull out any air bubbles that are forming in the top of the u tube. This also makes the overflow self priming in case of a power outage, thus it will regain its siphon once the power comes back on! :D

on your powerhead where the water comes out there is a small hole on top of that so that a person can hook up a airline to get o2 through the powerhead

If you are running the u tube there is no need to use anything extra. The outgoing water keeps the bubbles from collecting in the tube. If the pump is shut off it will not break siphon in your overflow u tube; because the overflow box that uses u tubes are designed so that when the pump's power is returned on, it will just simply start siphoning water again.

I would change to u tube they are very reliable overflows.

Get a u-tube or drill the tank... you wont be sorry.
