Anyone here running a needlewheel pump other than Sedras for their ASM skimmer? I'm looking to upgrade from the Sedra 3500 to a 5000 but it's a bit big for my sump so I want to know what my options are. The Gen X 2400 or Ocean runner 2500 look like they might work.

ccoral, did you have to mod anything for it to fit? Did you see a significant improvement in performance?

I put a red dragon on my g3. Sure the pump was $600, but I do think that I have an awesome skimmer!

Sheep dawg, I used parts from an older G seires skimmer to retro fit the new skimmer for this set up.
So a mod was not needed. As performance I do believe it is working better but to be fair they are not working side by side so a comparision is difficult. Also at the last show in San Diego. Saw that Rio had needle wheels available for all larger Rio plus.

First, let me say I feel the gen-x n/w design is better than the sedra for creating bubbles:: I have tried the gen-x 6000 on my G4X, (when it was not recirulating), man it was a great set -up!!
I set it up r/c and mygen-x could not pump against the "head". the sedra 9000 did fine. (gen-x pumps must be mounted higher on body to work properly for r/c models, but I am sure will work great)
gen-x 2400 n/w is a fine pump ( creates lots of fine bubbles -owned 3) Now to answer you question, is it about the same GPH? non-r/c? then by all means use one!
Oh, the only gen-x nw I tried and didn't like was the 1000. it couldn't make bubbles in a can of beer! (I may have a bad one and only messed with it for @ 5 min)

OR pumps are awsome! ( 2700 and 3700) :) they have the same design n/w as gen-x. BTW, both the gen-x and OR are as big as the sedras.
