I'm planning on picking up one of these to use on my fuge after reading that many people use these. I'm wondering if it's overkill though or will cause me any heat problems. I will putting this over a 29 gallon tank that I will section off with about 12 gallons of the tank being for a fuge.

If you use one, how is the heat from this thing? I already have two CoralVue MH ballast in my cabinet that make it pretty warm.

If you get one that will last, there pretty good lights. But they do produce a good amount of heat, but i dont think there any worse/better than running a spot light.about the same amount of heat. When i used to have my sump under my tank i ran the light only at night 12 on 12 off to keep temps lower.

I only plan on running it part of the time. Are there some quality issues with the light? I read a review that the 500W version was pretty good but the smaller versions suffered in quality.

I'm using the 500 watt model over my fuge with no problems for a few months now. As a bonus it gives off a fair amount of light strong enough for some LPS and softy frags, but most SPS will fade out even up top right under it.

Theres abunch of posts around where people claimed the ballast over heated.some are pretty old though.my first light lasted about 3 weeks,my 2nd light has been going for about a year now.I did drill a few vent holes in the top though to let the heat escape.
I would stick with the 500w version.its almost enough light to grow softie frags under
