WPG means Watts per Gallon is there a rule in saltwater aquariums like 1 watt per every gallon and what is the minium amount of watts you have to have

Watts per gallon does not really work. You have to concider the depth of the aquarium and what you plan to keep.

yeah it depends. I have 11.2wpg on my tank, but that is almost not enough. See i have a 150watt Mh and 130watts of PC, but my tank is 20" deep, so once you get down to the botton of the tank the lighting is cut down to almost nothing usable. I wish i had gone with a 250watt MH even though that would give me a higher wpg, see it doesn't mater to much.

Now if you don't want corals or anything you have have whatever light you want on your tank.

Also, if your tank is very long you can opt to have more intense light on one side and weaker on the other. That will depend on what kind of coral you intend to keep.
Light doesn't work like salt that you know how much you need based on the amount of water.
You can actually have MH on one side and just standard fluorescent on the other and just keep corals on the MH side. Do you get the idea?

It can also change by type of lighting too... Power compacts may have higher wattage but the new t5's give off more intense light even though the wattage is lower(especially with individual reflectors). I am getting more light with less amount of wattage. Different types of light will also penetrate deeper depending upon their spectrum.
