Well i'ts been two full weeks since I acclimated a green star polyp
colony into my tank. Throughout the entire two weeks the polyps never came out , much to my dismay the purple mat on which they grow is starting to turn white. To me this means they are either dead or dying and now I'm wondering what to do now. Do I a] pitch the rock and weep uncontrolably b] remove the dead or dying matter and try to save the rock while weeping uncontrolably or c] leave the rock alone and see what happens to the poor creatures while staring at them with a great sense of loss. If anybody has actually taken the time to read all my whining my current water prams are.....amonia 0 nitrite 0 nitrate 0 calcium 420ppm kh 3 sg 1.023 temp 79.5F. Colony was put in moderate light with moderate flow. Cheers.

I would just remove the dead parts of the colony and hope for the best.

I hope the dKH isn't really 3. Do you mean 3 meq/L? Also, SG is a little low. I target 1.026-1.027. The other parameters seem okay.

Sorry i do mean 3 meq/L . I would like to ask why you keep your SG so high isn't sea water in the 1.020 to 1.025 range, also should I slowly adjust my tank to those params

I forgot to ask when I remove the dead matter do I do this in water or out of and if out how long do I have before I cause more damage. Is there any benifit to keeping a high SG. thanks for any replys.

The canonical "average sea water" is about 1.026-1.027, depending on the reference temperature chosen, but varies depending on location. I think that lower salinity stresses animals unnecessarily, based on various articles, etc.

The GSP should still have been OK

What light do you have over the tank?
What light was the GSP growing under before?
Is this a frag from another reefer?

Usually you have to worry about controlling how it spreads :)

I agree that the SG doesn't explain the coral problem. On the other hand, there could be measuring problems, come to think of it. This article might be useful:
