View Full Version : Traces of precipitation

I use Randy's 2 part number 1 formula. I dose quite a bit each day to maintain calk and alk. I get just a small precipitation when I add the alkalinity in the sump, it dissolves quite rapidly and I have never had any in the main tank and it goes away rapidly in the sump.

I am assuming this is not a problem. (I think it is precip, it looks like flakes then dissolves by the time it reaches the other side of the sump, It's hard to describe)

What say ye?

Regards,

Pat

That sounds as if you could be seeing magnesium hydroxide precipitating in the high-pH area formed by dosing. That's fairly normal, although I don't usually see flakes. I suspect that might be due to the higher dose to volume ratio, since I am dosing into a 29g tank, and only a moderate dose at that.

Thanks Jonathan, they really aren't flakes, a more apt description might be dust.

Thanks for the link. My favorites folders are getting full.
