Does the outer black/oak/cherry whatever color, rim along the top and bottom of a tank offer support or could it be cut off?

yes it does act as a brace. the silicone provides most of the tanks structural strength but the braces at the top and bottum do assist a significant amount in keeping the tank in tact. i really would advise against permanently removing it.

that's an ODD question coming from a pet shop manager..??
many glass tanks use the trim for support..removal is NOT advised..you can contact the maker to find out for sure..

The reason I ask is a friend of mine removed his from his 20long. I always thought it was rather important to keep on, but he insisted it was just for show.

So this thread was basically to see who was right.

Thanks,
Matt

On smaller tanks the trim add rigidity and minimizes bowing of fairly thin glass. Suggest to him he measure the front to back width of the tank enpty and filled with water. I suspect when he realizes how much the tank bows he'll replace the trim.
