I'm new to the hobby and have a question. My green star polyps were doing wonderful for about 3 months and then all of a sudden they've closed up. The mat has some black where the polyps open and they do open a little now, but nothing like before. Any ideas why??

What is the "black" that you are describing? If it is something that wasnt there before then I would gently rub it off with your finger and then they should open up in a day or two. JUst let us know how it goes

Does it come off? I keep a toothbrush for use in the tank

Keep your GSP in check, if it does OK it will spread & will sting/kill whatver it grows over

Green Star Polyps can be very sensitive to a growth of micro-algae on their "encrustation"...that's the part that purple in color, out from which the polyps open. Rubbing it off with a finger's all right if they don't open. When they're open, occasionally blast them with water, using a turkey baster so that detritus doen't collect on them allowing adventitious micro-algae to get a foothold on them.
