I do believe the guys from australia are actually ocellaris. they are actually being bred comercially. They get snatched up pretty quick though. When I can find them they run around $40.
Onyx percs come from the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. These guys are pricey too.

at that price, perhaps an incorrectly used common name was used in place of a species name such as amphiprion latezonatus?

At 3K, they'd better be talking about McC's!

He could very well be talking about occellaris. They do come from Ausi only and they are not imported. If you were to get a WC pair that would probably be around what they'd go for.

ORA is the only place I've herd of having them, and they breed them like crazy! so the price for tank bred offspring ARE only like $40 each.

Thats Rod not rob. :)

& this guy said he's looking for wild caught not CB. If your looking for WC onyx true percs go to live aquaria & call them. I dont think they advertize them anymore but they still get them often. Or just ask your local LFS to order some true percs from PNG. They seem to come in from their more than SI.

If he is talking about the black variant of A. ocellaris, then yes that is about what they would run.

Good luck getting them though, collection is restrictive in AU and the Drawin area recently went thru on heck of a typhon, like 200+MPH winds. Not too mention the man eating croc's in the area...

How do you tell if they are wild caught or captive bred? I work at an lfs and a wholesaler sent us what he called wild caught black ocellaris from Au. I'm very skeptical myself but the clowns lack some of the abnormalities I see in the captive bred ones we sell at the store, i.e. a square or misaligned jaw.

Perhaps a picture would help? I can always post pictures

pics are always a plus, but I dont think there is a way to distinguish wc from tr. If JHardman is correct then the wc fish would be horribly priced more likely they tank raised unless they were A. Polymnus which are often labled as black percs(that really ****es me off when it happens too!)

Most likley mislabled or from ORA. How much were they wholesale? if they were not at least a few hundred ... they are definatly not wild caught black occ.

Well, first off if they are truely WC black variant A. ocellaris, then you would be paying the thousands of dollar range per pair. That would be one dead giveaway.

If you are ever unsure and maybe just think the wholesaler is a moron, you can aways ask to see the import paper work, which has to contain the source of the fish.

Another way to tell the difference between wc and cb... wild clowns stay alive just long enough to destroy your tank with an unknown fungus/bacteria, only to die themselves. Big fun!
