Does this look like something is eating it?

I have had this and my tank inhabitents for about 6 months. I have a Potters Angel, Yellow Tang, Royal Gramma, Green Chromis, and Fire Clown.

Thanks in advance!

To me it looks like it is dying... You should cut those parts off before it affects the whole piece.

Also how much iodine are you adding to your tank?

Other reefers use xenia as a monitor. If it start dying it means there is something wrong with your parameters. Start checking your parameters specially amonia, nitrate, nitrite and phosphate.

Any word? I would definately cut off the damaged pieces with a scissor.

I wouldn't cut anything. Sometimes these animals shrivle up due to something in the water that they didn't like. It's happened to me a couple of times but I've just left it alone and they've always come back.

Like Ken, I too have had them look bad, I'm talking like 10 at one time, and just left them and they all came back fine. My biggest problem is keeping them under control from over growth.

I cut the bad parts off and it was good too because they were dead. They started comming apart as soon as i touched them and they stunk really bad.
I did a 10% water change and plan on doing another 10% this evening. I did not have time to check the water parameters. :( But I will do that for sure tonight. I will keep everyone posted.
Thanks for the help and concern.

The Xenis looks great now. I don't know what happened. All I did was cut the dead parts off and changed about 10% of the water.

I think it was the water change not the surgery! <lol>

It may have gotten infected and the polyps just died. This happens to large colonies of xenias because they can sometimes trap junk in between the branches and polyps.

I agree with cutting the bad parts off... Xenia also tend to get a yellow scabby fungus or infection... If you see that, start a piece of airline tubing siphoning into a bucket and slowly suck off the yellow parts. The scabs spread and can wipe out your population. I've had 3 crashes in 3 years, and since I started watching them, no problems.

xenias can be the watchdog of your system since they are sensitive to fragile water parameters. althought it is not uncommon for them not to open or pump for a few days at a time!

I thought my xeina colony was totally dead but it has reemerged from a little yellow blob.

It will reemerge... but it would have done so quicker had you scraped off the yellow blob (under it was a healthy, fleshy piece of xenia)
