Here is a rock I just picked up yesterday, about 30 +/- stalks of xenia, along with 4 rics and 2 rhodactis. This rock is about 12" x 18", I only paid 15 bucks for it!!! Here is a pic:

Sorry, whats the difference?

edit: I see cloves are clavularia and grow in mats, Xenia grows on stalks. :)

Sorry, I didn't know. I'm still new with xenia after being in the hobby for 4 years lol. This is the first stalk of xenia I have bought in my life, used 2 hate them. Now I know the difference.

no appologies necessary. i wouldnt have been able to tell the difference until i saw both in person either. just by looking at the polyps alone in a picture off the net or in a coral book doesn't really help.

but that is what a forum for the softies is for, right? :) i'll try to take a picture of what the polyps look like from the side all closed up. also, each polyp is quite large, the ones above are about 1" in diameter.

PS... if i had xenia with green centers like that, i would never have money problems ever again

 so true, I wish i had xenia like that ha. Awesome looking anyway. Do they grow as fast as xenia? (That huge rock right now is half covered with ricordia now too 8D, I got 20+ new corals this weekend at IMAC, and a new fish tank.)

I'll have to find the Blue and Yellow clove polyps on this site I've seen before. Other than those, the green w/ orange feathers would be the rarer forms.

What are the white things seen poking out through the cloves?

they are kinda like "runners" that snake over the rocks, they may attach to the rock and put out more runners, or turn into baby cloves.

So what's the secret of growing them? Twice I've gotten them and they didn't thrive for me. Once they spread thinly over 1/4 of the tank, but never looked very well. I placed a small colony in light, they died back, I overshadowed them with a montipora, they spread out from under it, but still not very thick, so what parameters are necessary to have them thrive and grow thick?

good question, i'd like to know as well. i've had some for about a year, and i get about a polyp a month in new growth.

mine seem to have grown in spurts. everytime i change something in the tank i will get a new spurt of growth, but then they pretty much hault.

for instance, i added VHO's, got a growth spurt, added a pump to increase the flow, got another growth spurt, i added a better skimmer, got a big growth spurt of 3 polyps. but after each spurt of growth the growth pretty much haulted.

one thing ive noticed about my cloves is high indirect flow, and a shady area. they definitely dont like direct/indirect 10k MH lighting.

they are also a magnet for any algae in the tank it seems like.

Surf, that clove is beautiful and so are the others posted here.
I have been trying to find some but no luck.
How do they ship? Anyone every purchase them and have them shipped?
I have seen some pretty ones on Ebay but am affraid that the seller wont know how to pack them for a safe arrival.
I just have to get some cloves as I have great luck with xenia and these would be a beautiful addition.

Mine are the same color as my rock (purple) so unless you stare and see them sway in the current you could miss them. They were tan in the reef shop. I need to get a colorful bunch next time.

The ones I posted are from Ebay. And umm the do NOT look like the photo posted on Ebay. They are still pretty but I wish the purple was more purple than it shows. They shipped just fine, took em awhile to get fully open but I think part of that was due to not liking where I had them in the QT. It was of course the over night shipping.
BTW I've seen some on several sites for a good price, Wish I had gotten a good price but at the time these were the only ones I could find that had the green palm and purple feathers. (I dont know what to call em so I just say feathers.)

ok so my pictures aren't as good. The pictures are when i first got the colony. Since then they have gone more orange/yellow on the edges. I have also gotten 2 new polyps that i know of. The only reason i know that i had those is because i saw 2 polyps on another rock on the other side of the tank. Ben
